  • Luxury resort in the jungle on the banks of the Suriname river
  • An hour's drive from the Dutch-influenced capital, Paramaribo
  • Restaurant, riverside terrace, private beach and canoe/boat hire
What a splendid spot this is, surrounded by tropical gardens on the banks of the mighty Suriname river. Settle into a hammock, arm yourself with a cooling cocktail from the bar and get set for a dreamy afternoon of watching life go by on the river, perhaps punctuated with a doze here and there... In the jungle just under an hour’s drive south of Paramaribo, Marina Resort Waterland is a welcoming spot for serenity-seeking humankind as well as birds and other wildlife. Yachting types often drop in from the adjacent marina, and resort guests can take to the water too by hiring a rowing boat, canoe or paddleboard. All you need for a relaxing stay is here: the smart, spacious wooden bungalows have their own well-equipped kitchens, cable TV and top-notch bathrooms, and friendly staff are on hand to sort any requests. Reluctant chefs can easily avoid holiday kitchen duties by heading to the restaurant and its menu of homemade meals served up on the fab riverside terrace. A playground is on site for the small sorts to clamber about in and you can all trot down to the private river beach for a bit of family splash and paddle. When you’re ready to head out and about, have a chat with the on-site staff to get the lowdown on local attractions and the various options for organised tours or tailormade trips.

Local attractions

Start your jungle wanderings by hiring a canoe or rowing boat from the site to take out on the river, or hire a bike to explore the surrounding trails. On the other side of the river (the Commewijne) are some top walking and bike routes along the canals and through the old coffee and cacao plantation properties. If your jungle explorations have left you in danger of overheating, pack your swimmers and head to Rocky’s waterpark, a 15-minute drive from the resort, for some cooling time in the swimming pool, kids’ pool and waterslides. Around an hour’s drive will take you to the capital and port city of Paramaribo, full of Dutch-inspired buildings from the years of colonial rule. Start by having a look around Fort Zeelandia, which charts the history of Suriname through from the Pre-Columbian era through to modern times, then take a walk along the Waterkant riverfront boulevard to see some well-preserved wooden houses. Also worth a visit is the St Peter and Paul Cathedral, the biggest wooden church in the world.
