If you’re making your way around Murcia in a motorhome, stop over for a couple of days (minimum) at Los Olivos Camper Park, in a peaceful position surrounded by olive trees in the Costa Cálida, an area that gets a whopping 300 or so days of sunshine a year. With such an elevated chance of cloudless skies, it's certainly worth setting up your camping chair on a spacious pitch at this park within Cartagena’s Los Puertos de Santa Bárbara district, surrounded by the peace and quiet of a wild forest. And it's not just serene but also very secure, with a gate that locks automatically and a CCTV system. If you feel like getting out and about, start by wandering out into the woods or chatting to staff about the top hiking trails nearby. As the park's in a rural setting and just a 20-minute drive from the coast there are plenty of outdoorsy things to get stuck into nearby: how about biking, diving, watersports, fishing, whale-watching? The park’s also 20 minutes away from the city of Cartagena, and 25 minutes from the town of Mazarrón, where trying traditional Murcian meals like pastel de carne (meat pie) in the restaurants comes highly recommended. Petrol stations, pharmacies, supermarkets and banks are all a short drive away too and a small shop is on site. A toilet block, showers, laundry area, washing-up facilities and free wifi are also on site, along with amenities accessible for people with disabilities. Pets are allowed on the grounds – good news if you’re taking a trip with any four-legged friends.

Liked: Hier hat man alles, was man braucht. Wasseranschluss am Platz. Super nettes Personal. Große Stellplätze. Sanitäre Anlagen sauber. Bäcker kommt jeden Morgen an die Stellplätze. Alles einfach nur Super.

Liked: Very well looked after site with very clean facilities.Nice and quiet,with added bonus of locked gate at night.Regular delivery vans offering bread,cakes,fruit veg etc.Lovely mountain views from pitch.All pitches with good space. Friendly helpful staff who speak excellent English. Highly rated site.Price very cheap compared UK sites.

Liked: Good-sized pitches; secure site; immaculate facilities; very helpful pleasant staff; regular visits by a baker and a green-grocer.

Disliked: Barking dogs on nearby farms/houses. Difficulty finding site because inputting name and address into google map takes you to a place over 2 miles away

Local attractions

Head over to Cartagena, Mazarrón and La Azohía (all under 30 minutes' drive) for plenty of beaches, with some of the best being in the protected marine reserve of Cabo Tiñoso. Also try Playa La Cortina for a compact cove, or settle on the sand in front of the rocky crags at Playa de la Cola del Caballo. Mosey east for a change of scenery at the Mar Menor, a coastal saltwater lagoon, heading past its furthest reaches for the cute village of Cabo de Palos and its marina and fish restaurants (35 minutes). Walk along the rocky coastline to the lighthouse for sweeping views over the water, and if you’re here on a Sunday morning, browse the 100 stalls at the market for everything from vegetables to bags. More shopping’s to be had in the port city of Cartagena (20 minutes), which also has a first-century BC theatre and Roman-era murals and mosaics at the Casa de la Fortuna to check out. For history that’s a touch more modern, the Naval Museum is well worth a look.
