  • Wooded bush area near Kenton on South Africa's smashing Sunshine coast
  • A short drive to the Kariega Game Reserve and lots of good beaches
  • Lots of trees, open space and a playground
How positively positive. Bushwillow Primary School has created this splendid site among the bushland that lies alongside it to help raise funds and expand its education facilities, and with a view to providing more local littlies from lower income families with its particular brand of child-led primary learning. And as well as being a super social enterprise, this site is set splendidly for days along South Africa’s Sunshine Coast, with easy access to spots and sights like the award-winning Kariega beach, between the Kariega and Bushmans river estuaries, and the Volo, a Norwegian 19th-century shipwreck skeleton half-submerged in sand. One could spend aeons around the Eastern Cape; it’s got game reserves, golf courses, 4x4 and hiking trails, and for those seeking to punctuate all this with spells of slightly lower-octane activity, restaurants, nightlife and health resorts are around too. Set in Kenton-on-Sea – a small coastal town on the Eastern Cape’s Sunshine Coast – the site has facilities that include hot-water showers toilets and a washing-up area, plus a wifi service (an extra fee applies) and lockable USB charging points to juice up your digital devices. And as you might expect from a site attached to a primary school, there’s also a jungle gym in the fenced-off school grounds for little guests to use too.

Local attractions

Kenton’s beaches have been hailed as some of the best in South Africa: for starters there’s Kariega beach, set between the tidal rivers of Kariega and Bushmans, spot on for family outings and scenic strolls next to the Ghio Wetland Nature Reserve that runs alongside; then there’s the vast stretch of sand, Boknes river pedal boat rides and warm lagoon at Boknes beach, all making for tiptop days with the tiddlies too. Elsewhere inland, head to Waters Meeting Nature Reserve and climb the observatory to catch the cracking views over the Kowie River horseshoe bend, and relax around the pretty picnic area there. Also splendidly, the game reserves of Kariega and Sibuya, home to heaps of birds and big critters like lions, elephants, leopards, rhino, hippo and giraffe, are also within superly easy reach. For several scenic hiking routes, head to the Assegaai Trails, less than half an hour’s drive away, for 35 kilometres’ worth around a nature reserve past swimming holes, grassland, riversides and highly spectacular lookout points.
