  • Peaceful holiday park five minutes' drive from Rangiora
  • 15 minutes off State Highway 1 and half an hour from Christchurch
  • Swimming pool, playground, trampoline and well-equipped kitchen
Seeking a stopover on an epic cross-country trip down the length of State Highway 1? Or maybe you’re just planning some rambles around Rangiora and jaunts into Christchurch? Either way (or both ways, of course) Rangiora Eco Holiday Park is a handy base – this peaceful park is three kilometres from townie amenities in Rangiora and a 15-minute drive from South Island’s main north-south highway. It should take you half an hour or so to drive into central Christchurch, and you’re within easy reach of some fab hikes around the beaches, lakes and bushland of the wider Waimakariri district. Particularly welcome features if you’ve had a lengthy drive are the park’s outdoor pool (with retractable cover to ensure swims even on gloomier days), and a playground and trampoline where cooped-up kids can let off steam. A launderette and dump station deal with some everyday essentials, and there’s a well-equipped communal kitchen for those who want to cook. Supermarket supplies are five minutes’ drive away in town, as are restaurants for folks who’d rather let someone else take care of the catering.

Local attractions

Rangiora’s a good place to base yourself if you fancy a ramble or a bike ride – the town’s got easy access to several trails both short and longer, and some enticing picnic spots. Hillier hikes at Mount Thomas Forest Conservation Area are half an hour away, or you could make your way to Woodend with a 20-minute drive for strolls on its sandy beach. If you’re in town on a Sunday it’s worth taking a peek at the meet schedule to see if there’s any action at the racecourse right next door to the site. Animals of a less competitive nature can be seen at the Wee Dram Farm Park, five minutes away – a popular pick for the tiddlers. For urban ambling, it’s about a half-hour drive to Christchurch; get your bearings on the city’s tram or with an aerial view from the Christchurch Gondola before taking in the botanic gardens, art galleries and museums; the moving Quake City exhibit is well worth a visit. A little further again (40 minutes from the park) is Lyttelton Harbour, jumping off point for boat trips to Quail Island and jetski tours along this scenic stretch of coastline.
