  • A 20-minute drive to Hobbiton Village; Waikato River Trail, 15 minutes
  • Passes available for 24-hour hot pool access; nine-hole golf course
Hot thermal pools, the real-life Hobbiton Shire and river hies… if that gets a big applause from you, make haste for Okoroire Hot Springs Hotel Camp in Waikato. Part of the Okoroire Hot Springs Hotel, this family-friendly hideout is across the road from the nine-hole Okoroire golf course and 40 metres from the hotel’s three hot thermal pools. Nab yourself a ticket to the hot pools for soaks morning, day and night. The hot pools are open 24 hours per day. If you’re looking to scope out yet more hot springs, there’s a hiking trail to Blue Spring Putaruru, which takes several hours (although, a 15-minute drive will get you there in a flash). Well-maintained and surrounded by an open green landscape, it should be no surprise that this place can get busy during the high season. That may also be down to the prime location, 20 minutes’ drive from the Hobbiton Village. This sheep farm is real-life Shire from The Hobbit, and guided tours will take you around the movie set where Bilbo Baggins resided. Your adventures might be just as exciting as the hobbit’s (though, not as perilous), considering that Okoroire Hot Springs Hotel Camp is 15 minutes’ drive from the start of the 104-kilometre Waikato River Trail. Accessible on foot or by bicycle, the path ventures into the bush, forests and farmlands.

Liked: The grass was cuy

Disliked: The facility’s were disgusting. Only one toilet working which was leaking so floor was all wet. The shower there was only one and if it worked the owner admitted having a problem with the water!! Was very rustic and there was no WiFi on the field. You had to pay $20.00 each to use the spa river We paid $102. And left after visiting the site as the electric hook ups where all round the toilet block. We only got $40 returned

Liked: Location and the heritage hotel / bar

Disliked: The camping facilities are awful. There is only 1 male & 1 female toilet (a single toilet in each, not a block ) one shower (not a block of multiple showers) none of which were very clean. The Mitch was even worse

Liked: Meals up at the hotel were delicious! I only used the top pool as was told by others there that the top one was the hottest... the water isn't as hot as I normally prefer but the glorious location more than makes up for that... beautiful birdsong first thing, and a stunning outlook out over the adjacent river... I am looking forward to going back!

Disliked: The campground soil was totally saturated, there is no gravel driveway or concrete hardstands to park on. I got stuck driving in but thankfully two men staying on site gave the van a push - no mean feat! 7m and very heavy, and going nowhere in that mud under it's own steam. Several other vehicles got stuck while I was there and ended up needing to be towed out by a 4wd vehicle. I shall be sticking to dry weather visits from now onwards :)

Liked: Unfortunately things got stuffed up. You took our booking but when my cousin rang to book into Hotel he was told the place WAS BOOKED OUT due to a Concert. We were very fortunately to have found out as we would not have been happy to have travelled all the way down there to find we couldn’t get in. Very poor.

Local attractions

Outdoorsy adventures first up on your to-do list? Fishing and boating will keep you busy at the Little Waipa Reserve (20 minutes’ drive). You’ll be well-entertained with the trails and wildlife in the Whakarewarewa Forest Park (50 minutes) too. There are over 200 kilometres of mountain biking trails alone, in fact. Whakarewarewa Forest Park is right alongside Rotorua (35 minutes), but you may want to put aside a whole day to this tantalising town. There are spas and wood carving or weaving classes. Between the forest and the town, check out the geothermal mud pools in the Whakarewarewa - The Living Maori Village (45 minutes) and the Pohutu Geyser (45 minutes), which ejects water several times per day. What about a city too? On the Waikato river, Hamilton (50 minutes) has a zoo, museum and a lively collection of restaurants and bars. Tauranga (40 minutes) might tempt you along too. The coastal city has access to the beaches and hot saltwater pool in Mount Maunganui (45 minutes) and boat trips are available to White Island’s active volcano.
