Countryside haven or some lively urban action in the Eastern Bay Of Plenty? No need to choose between the two when you stay at Ōpōtiki Holiday Park, which has a relaxed, rural setting on the banks of the Waioeka River, but is only five minutes’ walk from the shops, bars and cafés of Ōpōtiki town centre. This family-friendly park has spacious grass sites (both powered or unpowered), from where you can live life in the open air. Kids can amuse themselves at the adventure playground, or you can join them for a dip in the swimming pool, go kayaking along the Waioeka and Otara rivers, fish from the wharf or join a guided native bush walk. When it comes to facilities, the park is geared towards making your camping break as easy as possible. Token-metered showers, a laundry and TV lounge are all at your disposal, along with a modern, well-equipped communal kitchen and shared dining room – and if you feel like having someone else do the cooking for you, simply stroll into Ōpōtiki and choose between its gastropubs, takeaways and pizzerias.

Local attractions

Keen to get out exploring the Bay of Plenty? Introduce the kids to walking on the easy, coastal Tirohanga Dunes Trail (five minutes’ drive) for spectacular views over the Pacific Ocean and the East Cape. Alternatively, hike the Motu Trail network, which starts at the wharf next to the holiday park (five minutes’ walk), and continues to Snells Beach (45 minutes), where you can stop for a dip, or go further and grab an ice cream from Tirohanga Beach Store (90 minutes). The Waioeka River provides a handy backdrop for adrenaline freaks looking for jet-boating and river-rafting adventures. For land-based challenges, cycling nuts can follow the Pakihi Track (five minutes by bike) for off-roading on trampers and mountain bikes in fern forest following a former stock route. Too much hard-core action for you? Surfcast for snapper and kingfish from local beaches like Hikuwai (10 minutes’ drive), play a round of golf at Ōpōtiki Golf Club (five minutes), or get down with the kids on your skateboard/blades/BMX bike to practise your skills at Ōpōtiki Skate Park, five minutes’ walk from your tent.
