  • Peaceful rural lodge between Witvlei and Gobabis
  • Walking and driving trails from the site for game viewing
  • Restaurant, bar, swimming pool, playground and putting green
Sipping a chilled beer or a cocktail, watching the animals gather at the waterhole as the sun sets – surely the most civilised form of game viewing? Proving that bush camp doesn’t have to be basic is West Nest Lodge, a smart rural site eight kilometres from the Trans-Kalahari Highway between Witvlei and Gobabis. As well as the well-stocked bar, other creature comforts on site include an outdoor pool and a rather fine restaurant. Time at the resort can also be spent putting balls at the driving range or nine-hole putting green, playing games of volleyball or hurtling down the 10-metre zipline. Kids can also let off steam clambering and swinging around at the playground. But what you’ve really come for is the game viewing, right… and what a place you’ve picked for it. Four-wheel drive trails lead out into the bush directly from the resort, or you can take things at a slower and quieter pace by strolling out on one of the walking trails – either way, make sure you’ve got binoculars and a fully charged camera to hand for the inevitable encounters with kudus, giraffes and all sorts of exotic birds.

Local attractions

Eastern Namibia is pretty sparsely populated – and that of course is part of the attraction, with plenty of open space for all that wildlife to roam about in. Whether you’re here for just one day or a few, most of your time out and about will revolve around seeing what kind of creatures you can spot. For more things to do, head on over to Windhoek, a two-hour drive away. The National Museum of Namibia and the Trans-Namib Railroad Museum are worth a visit here, as is the National Botanic Garden of Namibia. Get a taste of daily life in the city on a township tour and pick up souvenirs at the city’s many craft markets and shops.
