  • Peaceful family-friendly forest site with private beachfront
  • Less than an hour from big game spotting at Maputo Special Reserve
  • Spot duiker, bush babies and samango and vervet monkeys from the site
Be sure to pack your swimming cossie and some beach-friendly gear before you come to Wakene Beach Estate – at the family-friendly site less than 10 minutes’ drive from the small village of Ponta Malongane in the Maputo province of Mozambique, you’ll most definitely need them. The site is well placed for scenic explores of the area and getting a feel for Mozambican life and culture. There’s private access to the site’s own beachfront, so be ready for Indian Ocean dips, as well as leisurely strolls on sandy shores and oceanside treks along the coast to Ponta Malongane and the village of Ponta do Ouro. When you need a break from the sun, dive under the cover of the coastal forest for walks under dappled light, or seek out a baraka (a kind of rustic bar) for cooling afternoon bevvies and to try out your Portuguese or Tsonga with the locals. For local eats, there are plenty of restaurants around here for plates of seafood or Portuguese-style chicken, or you can stop by the fresh food market for supplies, then wander back to site to throw them on the barbecue. Spend your evenings kicked back next to the campfire, keeping eyes sharply peeled for the duiker, bush babies, and samango and vervet monkeys that drop by from time to time.

Local attractions

If you can’t get enough of being out on the water, Ponta Malongane should be your first stop for fishing charters, spear fishing and scuba diving before you swim along the coast to Ponta do Ouro (or a half-hour drive) – there’s a mile-long break here, so it’s a must visit for beach buffs and surf seekers, plus it’s a local hot spot for kite surfing and quadding on the sands. Fancy spending some time meeting the locals? Book yourself onto a dive tour to get up close with the neighbourhood dolphins and sharks. Maybe you’re more of an on-land wildlife fan… you’re sorted for that here too. The site is a little under an hour from the western gate of the Maputo Special Reserve – make tracks as quickly as poss for guided tours and the chance to see hippos, giraffes, zebras and part of the reserve’s 200-strong herd of elephants. Stay out in nature by crossing the South African border at Kosi Bay (45 minutes away) and continuing on to iSimangaliso Wetlands Park, an hour from base, to explore the palm forests, swamps and reed channels and keep a wary eye out for lurking crocs and the Big Five. Not your style? Have a city day in Mozambican capital Maputo (under three hours away) for the Tunduru Gardens, museums, galleries and shopping.
