  • Quiet resort with pool, bar and restaurant
  • Diving and fishing trips from site; free kayaking and paddleboarding
  • A 50-minute drive from the wildlife of the Maputo Special Reserve
Would you rather meet an elephant or a shark? Whether the answer’s both or either, get over to Gala Gala Eco Resort in southern Mozambique, a minute’s walk from the Indian Ocean and a 50-minute drive from the trumpeting herds of the Maputo Special Reserve. This environmentally-friendly resort is a few minutes’ drive from the centre of Ponta do Ouro in Matutuine province, and half an hour from the South African border, in an area famed for its white sandy beaches, clear blue seas and wetland nature reserves. Ponta do Ouro’s mile-long break makes the place a mecca for surfers and the wide stretches of empty sands are well set up for kitesurfing and quad biking as well. You can borrow kayaks and paddleboards free of charge from the site to splash up and down the coast, and arrange dolphin encounters and deep sea fishing trips from here too. When you return from the ocean laden with your catch, there’s a communal barbecue area for you to grill on, and a shared kitchen with fridge for the finer details of feast preparation. If that’s all too much effort, stroll over to the restaurant for fresh prawns and other treats of the sea or pour yourself a R&R (that’s the local tipple, rum and raspberry juice…) at the honesty bar and then have a dip in the secluded and palm-fronded outdoor pool while contemplating your options.

Route directions

The site is a kilometre south of the main bay of Ponta Do Ouro. Follow the signboards as you enter Ponta Do Ouro, just past the local market where the tar road ends. The roads are sandy so low ground clearance cars may find it difficult. The site can also arrange pick ups from the market, where there is safe parking at a minimal cost.

Local attractions

Whether you’re a diehard diver or tempted to try it for the first time, the helpful Gala Gala Eco Resort team can fix you up, and there’s a number of classic dive spots nearby of varying depth and difficulty. Take the Three Sisters trip to see the longnose hawkfish unique to this coastline and meet the gigantic resident honeycomb eel, or if you’re up for a challenge, hang with the hammerhead and tiger sharks on the deeper Atlantis dive. When you’re ready for dry land, it’s a 50-minute drive to the west gate of the Maputo Special Reserve, 1,670 square kilometres of protected lakes, mangrove swamps and forested dunes where elephants and hippos, giraffes and zebras make their home. It’s also a haven for various forms of rare feathered life, such as African fish eagles, olive bee-eaters and white helmetshrikes. If you cross into South Africa, the Kosi Bay area (45 minutes) presents a very different kind of wilderness. Part of the iSimangaliso Wetlands Park, this region of raffia palm forests, swamps and reed channels is best explored in 4x4s and boats. Rare palm nut vultures graze in the forests, leatherback and loggerhead turtles nest on the beaches and the local Thonge people trap fish with methods thousands of years old.
