  • Family site with stunning views of Vilankulo bay and Bazaruto islands
  • Easy stroll from white sandy beach
  • Top spot for watersports and dolphin watching
Clear, warm waters, white sandy beaches and a taste of the island life… At Island View Vilankulo, a small family-friendly site nine kilometres from the coastal town of Vilankulo in the Inhambane province of southern Mozambique, that’s precisely what you can expect. This is 4x4 country, so your sense of adventure should kick in almost immediately – it might be spurred along by your trip to Island View from Vilankulo over sand roads, or by the palm, nut and fruit trees you’ll be driving past as you wend your way towards the site. Take your adventuring off dry ground with a jaunt around the bay or across to the islands of the Bazaruto archipelago (bring your own boat or hire the rowboat or sailboat from the site if you want to take to the seas). Bazaruto is a protected national park, so expect spectacular coral reefs, marine turtles and humpback whales, and be sure to keep an eye out for dolphins and the traditional dhow fishing boats as you cross the water. When you’re feeling peckish, you can buy fresh fish straight from the dhows on the beach and grill it up on the barbecue before tucking in next to your campfire or, if you’d prefer a break from cooking, try the restaurant just a few minutes’ walk along the beach or head into Vilankulo for a few more options. Kick back after your dins in the shade among the trees and palms, or plonk yourself on top of the dune that shelters the site for stunning views over Vilankulo bay to Benguerra island and the archipelago.

Local attractions

Island View Vilankulo is in a prime spot for an active beachside getaway. Make your way into Vilankulo for kite surfing, sailing, cruises, boat safaris, diving and scuba trips to the islands or, if you’d prefer to stay on terra firma, clamber into the saddle for horse and camel rides along the beach. There’s plenty else to do in Vilankulo if you’re of a less active disposition: explore the harbour and markets, stroll around the town and call in to Machilla Magic, a community uplift gallery chock-full of locally produced arts and crafts. History buffs will want to make their way to Manyikeni, a proposed UNESCO World Heritage Site just over an hour’s drive from Island View – it’s a traditional Zimbabwean regional centre and the buildings are worth a poke around – and its partner site of Chibuene on the coast outside Vilankulo. If you don’t mind piling into the 4x4 for a long-distance jaunt, Zinave National Park and its wildlife sanctuary is a 3-hour drive from site, and Inhambane (the capital city of the province) is just under four hours away.
