  • Simple site on the dunes next to Bilene lagoon
  • Snorkelling, deep-sea fishing and whale watching trips from the site
  • Individual washrooms, washing-up and braai areas; pool and restaurant
Want to catch a wahoo? Longing to bag a bludger? Deep-sea fishing aficionados will have a whale of a time (sorry) at Laguna Camp on the southern coast of Mozambique. And so will anyone else who’s into wide and white sand beaches, warm blue waters full of rare marine life.... and a heady mix of African and Portuguese culture, history and cuisine. This friendly site in Gaza province is On the dunes next to the Bilene lagoon and its beach, about an hour and a half’s drive from Maputo on sandy roads (if you prefer tarmac, or you aren’t driving a 4x4, the longer route takes around three hours), and 20 minutes from the seaside town of Praia do Bilene. Laguna Camp has a real wilderness atmosphere, but it’s also a comfy and well-maintained base for stays of any length. With peace and privacy in mind, each of the large pitches (which can accommodate up to eight people) are screened off with reed fences, and have their own washrooms, washing-up areas and barbecue/braai facilities… so even when the place is busy, it doesn’t feel it. In the same spirit, a generous spread of trees around the site keeps everyone cool no matter what the climate's up to. For further cooling off, there’s a pool on site for refreshing dips; a restaurant serving local dishes is also to hand if you're seeking further refreshment... and a pool table provides an alternative to after-dinner fishing/boasting conversation. Further entertainments, along with bars and eateries, are in town.

Local attractions

There's no direct access via land to the sea beach at Bilene but the Laguna Camp team are happy to help you book a boat, as well as arrange whale watching and deep-sea fishing excursions. For those fisherfolk heading out with grand ambitions, the seas around here are full of marine life from black marlin to Zambezi sharks (and wahoos too…) If you want to stay closer to quarters, the lagoon and its beach are a short stroll away, and you can paddle across in canoes to a small manmade reef that’s home to eels, parrot and angel fish and sufficiently close to shore to give first-time snorkellers a safe introduction. Alongside a spicy mix of African and Portuguese food, the attractions in capital city Maputo (an hour and a half's drive) include an 18th-century fortress and vibrant municipal market, museums of revolution, art and natural history, a modernist cathedral, and a still-standing iron prefab built for the governor-general in 1892. It’s also the departure point for boats to Inhaca, an offshore subtropical reserve whose seahorses and butterfly fish, snake eagles and pink-backed pelicans draw wildlife watchers from all over the world. If you're heading onwards, it's around three hours' drive to the leopards, giraffes and other wild beasts of the Limpopo National Park, and three and a half hours to cross the border into South Africa.
