  • Lively park eight kilometres from Perugia city centre
  • Outdoor pool
  • Restaurant serving Umbrian cuisine
You'll likely have a right rocking time at this Umbrian campsite… lively Camping Il Rocolo in the Perugia province has been buzzing since the 70s and is run by owners fully into their music: many tuneful events like disco nights, live bands and harmonious pool parties are organised on site for those who like to party. (Even better, you'll be close to events like the Umbria Jazz Festival – and EuroChocolate – too.) Not so much a music fan? Many other events and activities like theme night dinners, hiking trips and aerobics are arranged by the energetic Il Rocolo team, along with plenty of the same in high season (and a playground for the kids). Il Rocolo's owners pride themselves on top-notch customer service and have added a restaurant alongside the pool: head here for charcuterie platters, salads, meat grills, pasta and a vegetarian and gluten-free menu, all of which can be had near the pool, on the terrace or in the garden. A communal barbecue is on site for use if you'd rather cook for yourself. The campsite is about eight kilometres from province capital Perugia, in the Umbrian countryside shaded by trees and with spacious accommodation areas in a peaceful setting. Along with all the above, guests have access to a washing-up area, a launderette, toilets and showers.

Local attractions

Camping Il Rocolo is handily placed to get to the attractions of the Umbrian countryside and its towns, cities and heritage. It's eight kilometres from the hills, walks and Etruscan, Roman and medieval monuments of old Perugia, a city also famed for its creamy chocolate: you may have to be prepared to find your trews/shorts slightly tighter at the end of your hol than at the beginning… The parking at Perugia is what can be politely termed rather difficult, so leave the car behind and get there by bus. The Gothic palace of the medieval Palazzo dei Priori should be a first stop, followed by the clever canvases at the Galleria Nazionale dell'Ubria and a gawk at the Etruscan Arch, one of the original seven Etruscan city gates. Villages, towns and cities are all over, like Norcia, the remote rural village that was the birthplace of St Benedict (you'll see pilgrims here too) and that's now a well-known gastronomic centre to try truffles, ham, salami, lentils, cheese and full and dark red wines. Or try the medieval town of Assisi, on the slopes of Monte Subasio and home of the smashing San Francesco Basilica decorated by the likes of Giotto, Cimabue and Simone Martini, or the small towns of Spoleto, Bevagna, Spello, Trevi and Montefalco. (Look out at this last for spectacular views, medieval walls and the local Sagrantino di Montefalco wine.)
