  • Eco-friendly countryside site with grassy grounds and mountain views
  • On the edges of Paramo Iguaque and 55 minutes’ drive to Villa de Leyva
  • Food and horse riding, rappelling, caving and climbing trips available
If you’re in Colombia visiting the top tourist town of Villa de Leyva, tag on some respite time at Monte Verde Cabañas y Camping. This eco-friendly site close to the boundaries of Paramo Iguaque national park in the Boyacá countryside is circled by walking paths you can wander off on while keeping an eye out for all sorts of exotic birds and vegetation. The whole place is prime for disconnecting – it’s compact, so you’re pretty much guaranteed no crowds and looks out at the mountains of the wildlife-rich area. When you’re hanging around, it also serves food using products gathered from the garden, meaning you can taste homemade treats – whether traditional breakfast or pizza from the woodfired oven – while staring at the views… If you’d like to learn how to cook Colombian classics, lessons are available too. Follow up with a glass of vino while playing shuffleboard next to the fireplace then head to bed for snoozes before explores to the sacred lake in the national park the next day, with hikes starting from about a 55-minute drive... Rather see what else the nature surrounding Monte Verde Cabañas y Camping has to offer? Ask on site about visits to reserves where you can learn about beekeeping and local ecosystems. You can also sign up for tours to the La Periquera waterfalls (about 30 minutes’ drive) and lagoons or have a go at horse riding, rappelling, caving and climbing if you’re already feeling well rested enough...

Local attractions

Wanting to explore more of the surroundings? Head to the town of Arcabuco and pick up some of the handmade cheeses sold here before munching on them during a wild walk in the surrounding valley beside a river and through oak forests (25 minutes’ drive). Or go to Gachantiva instead, another sweet settlement in the region, to laze beside the pretty Las Coloradas lagoon. Journey on towards Villa de Leyva, a colonial town considered one of the most well-preserved in Colombia, about 55 minutes from the site for people watching in the huge cobbled square, trying traditional arepas in hole-in-the-wall restaurants and taking snapshots of the bright orange Casa Terracota house. Another colonial town worth a mention is Raquira, an hour and a half from the park, if you’re keen on shopping for artisan-made goods like traditional northern Andean pottery and hand-woven items.
