  • Peaceful, scenic North Wales site on the edge of Eryri (Snowdonia)
  • A 10-minute drive to Caernarfon Castle; 20 to Zip World Penrhyn Quarry
  • Table tennis, skittles and pool on site, plus 20 acres to explore
With a magical setting overlooking Eryri (Snowdonia) hills, Rhyd y Galen is a peaceful caravan and camping park in rural North Wales. Fancy exploring the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia), the beautiful North Wales coastline and the Isle of Anglesey? Then this is your place. For your ease, access to the grass camping pitches is via tarmac roads. Generous in size and fully serviced, they come with a whole host of facilities, from a spotless shower block, well lit at night for your convenience and complete with hair dryers to keep you looking your best, to a family-friendly baby-changing unit and a laundry. On hand are 20 acres of land for families (and any canine pals) wanting to be out walking, playing and exploring, and if the kids should get restless, keep them entertained with games of table tennis, table football, skittles or pool. If you need to stock up on groceries, there are several supermarkets in Caernarfon (10 minutes’ drive), and if you fancy making a night of it in the town’s pubs and restaurants, ditch the car and jump in a local taxi.

Liked: Clean site. Shower block clean

Disliked: The traffic noise can be heard. Only one shower and two toilets. No rubbish deposit so had to take it home

From the manager: Thank you for the review. I’m pleased to hear that you found the site and shower block clean. We do actually have nine showers and thirteen toilets or urinals on site. Our bin store/recycling station is located near the entrance and would’ve been shown on the site map that you were given.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: The facilities were clean and modern with lovely warm showers. The games area, although a little dated was a nice added feature to keep the children entertained. The site was quiet and although we were quite near to the road, this didn't detract from the stunning views and location. Check in was quick and easy, with the site owner being helpful, friendly and even apologetic when it became apparent that our online booking had not been transferred from pitchup.com. We would definitely return and recommend this site.

From the manager: hank you so much for sharing your experience with us! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed our clean and modern facilities, as well as the added fun of the games area. It's wonderful to know that despite being near the road, you still appreciated the stunning views and peaceful atmosphere. We're glad our check-in process was smooth and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Thank you for recommending our site!

Unpowered grass site

Liked: The site and facilities are clean and well maintained. Great view of the hills.

Disliked: Only three showers for a large campsite is insufficient, there were queues in the morning. The site itself is not in walking distance of anywhere other than a dual carriageway.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback! We're pleased to hear that you found our site and facilities clean and well-maintained, and that you enjoyed the great view of the hills. We actually have 9 showers for our guests. Your comments regarding the queues in the morning have been noted, but I have never experienced any. There is a cafe within walking distance, but we do recommend our guests use the bus that stops by our entrance, or use their own vehicle to explore the many things to do in the local area.

Local attractions

Standing where the Afont Seiont river meets the Menai Strait, Caernarfon Castle (10 minutes’ drive) is a forbidding medieval fortress and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Perhaps best known as the place where Prince Charles was invested in 1969, it also houses the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum, which explores the history of this infantry regiment. If you’re in a ‘feel the fear, but do it anyway’ mood, you can head to Zip World Penrhyn Quarry (20 minutes), where the Velocity 2 zipline stretches across a lake, allowing you to travel at speeds of up to 100mph. If you are brave enough to keep your eyes open during your flight, you can also take in splendid views of Eryri (Snowdonia). For something less hair-raising, Portmeirion (40 minutes) is a village featuring Italian-inspired pastel-coloured buildings and lush sub-tropical vegetation. Grab an ice cream from Italian gelateria Caffi’r Angel, and take a leisurely stroll through the quaint streets or along the sandy beach on the Afon Dwyryd estuary.
