  • Peaceful and spectaculary scenic site with private fishing lakes
  • A 15-minute drive from Longleat and 20 minutes from Bath
  • Café, play areas and miniature golf
You might want to arrange things so you're able to stay here for quite some time... Family-friendly, pet-friendly and spectacularly scenic Fairwood Lakes is a peaceful and remote park under the Salisbury Plains. It guarantees excellent facilities, a warm welcome, first-rate accommodation and return-to-nature retreats set deep in countryside for couples and families. This is a highly scenic site, close to lakes and woodland: come here to fish, to laze or to use it as a base for investigating the lush landscapes and ancient sights within easy driving distance (Bath is 20 minutes from base and Stonehenge within half an hour; the site is also within 15 minutes of the fab Longleat House and Safari Park). The heart of the park is its lovely lakes, with carp up to 27lb, silverfish and pike all here to catch (fishing permits can be purchased from reception). And if you don't fancy angling? Amble around the lakes instead, for a peaceful several hours of daydreaming and wildlife spotting, or lie back with a book while the kids let loose in the play areas... there are three on site, including a large soft play area; the Little Tikes outdoor adventure play area, specifically for toddlers, and an outdoor play area for ages three and up. There is also miniature golf available on site. Among the swish facilities is a café, with wifi, an extensive decking area and a good range of freshly prepared breakfasts, sandwiches, light lunches, fresh coffees and homemade cakes to have in or take away. Special theme nights including summer barbecues and curry nights are held throughout high season. Its amenities include dishwashing facilities, toilet blocks, disabled toilets and chemical disposal points.

Liked: Spacious pitches surrounded by lovely on site walks around the lake. The staff were really helpful and nothing was too much trouble with assistance in getting discounted local attractions (20% off Longleat) The woodland lodges looked great although I didn’t Awww inside one. The cafe was convenient, clean and offered child and adult meals, cakes, warm pasties and sausage rolls. Play areas for younger children were perfect and plenty for them to do.

Disliked: Only an observation which didn’t detract was that the site is close to a railway line.

Liked: Lovely clean site, toilet and shower facilities good, lovely play area and soft play. Pitches good size (especially for our large twin axle caravan) and good privacy with hedges. Staff friendly on arrival. Didn't use cafe for our stay but it looked nice. Lakes on site were beautiful.

Disliked: Location of our pitch, would have preferred to be on left hand side- gravel area could be smaller allowing for a larger grass area - our tent guy ropes overhung onto gravel and obviously could not be hammered in

Liked: Beautiful holiday park that was spacious with plenty for our two young children to do yet still felt off grid and rural! The lakes were stunning to walk around and sit on the picnic benches with a coffee or breakfast. The campsite was nice and quiet and although I saw reviews that said the toilet block was quite far away from the pitches it was not, there was low level lighting at night which is understandable because of the rural area and minimal light pollution - I think it added to the peacefulness of the site. Other reviews I noted that the toilet/shower blocks were small and not very well kept - I never had to wait to use the toilet or shower and it wasn't busy despite it being summer holidays. It is also understandable that children need to be supervised at all times because there are lakes everywhere, I appreciated the seriousness taken with children's safety and reviews that complained about this should be grateful it is for children's best interests. The whole holiday park was well kept and staff were friendly. Absolutely loved this place and so reasonably priced for the quality of the park. Thank you!

Liked: Wonderful stay at the site. Kids loved it, great walks around the lakes and loads of activities for them to do. Big play area. Cafe and small shop was perfect. Shower and wc area was very clean and showers where very warm/hot.

Disliked: Some reviews on here have mentioned train noise. There is a train line which runs about 1/2 mile behind the site. You are able to hear the trains pass and toot which the kids loved but later you hardly hear them. Growing up in a city for us it was a nice thing to hear them so didn’t bother us.

Liked: The lakes to walk around. Play areas ok to keep kids entertained for a while.

Disliked: Grass ground had big holes so tent wasn't level. Crying kids in the night keeping us awake. Toilets run down and a Horrible smell (drains) Kids had to be watch constantly, our kids were going in and out of softplay into the forest park, we sat just outside soft play (it's small and we could see them) and were told to follow them everywhere they went.

Local attractions

What a lot there is to do around Fairwood Lakes's Westbury town and Wiltshire county location, from ancient gorges and ancient stones to exotic animal centres and racing car circuits. About 20 minutes away, lovely old Bath is famed most for its baths (funny, that), made popular by posh sorts in Victorian times, and for its Jane Austen Centre, a persuasively interesting house with museum and Regency tearoom. If you fancy doing something a bit different/more boastworthy, take to the skies above in a hot air balloon. Even more famed is Stonehenge 30 minutes away, for hours' worth of pondering just why ancient peeps decided to haul these mammoth rocks to stand up. The visitor centre has some suggestions, along with 250 ancient objects and tools of Neolithic life. All a bit too tame? Zip along to the motorsports of Castle Combe Circuit; tackle the sheer rock face and climb of Cheddar Gorge; watch the geegees hurtle along at Bath Racecourse, or take the kids to meet the witch at the Wookey Hole Caves.
