  • Cheddar 15 minutes; Burnham-on-Sea 20 minutes
  • A mile from a popular local pub and a windmill
After an adults-only place to stay in the South West of England? Located close to the Somerset coast and roughly 10 minutes' drive from the edge of the Mendip Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural beauty, Ashton Drove Motorhome Park has a small number of pitches in a laidback rural environment. With well-maintained land overlooking the Somerset Levels, here you'll have a tremendous sense of space as you gaze out over the open countryside that surrounds the park. There's bound to be a good amount of peace and quiet too, as kids aren't allowed to stay at this adults-only site. Dogs are permitted to come and stay here with you, but please make sure that they're well-behaved and kept under your full control at all times. Ashton Drove Motorhome Park is about a mile from Ashton's village windmill and a popular local pub, while about three miles in the other direction there's Wedmore (10 minutes' drive), where village stores, restaurants and other local amenities are available. The surrounding area has plenty of appealing options to explore, whether you're into your beaches, your birdwatching or fancy a round of golf on one of Somerset's best links courses. Bring your bike too, as the surrounding area is broadly flat and quiet enough for some pleasant pedalling.

Liked: Quiet, peaceful

Disliked: Disappointed that the owners shouted 'shut your dog up!', when our dog barked only for fifteen minutes when packing to leave. So much for dog friendly..... also, sheep grazing on the campsite. Nice friendly sheep but they left poo everywhere. Also, is this a good idea with dogs on site?

From the manager: Absolute lies I have never met or spoken with this person in my life,! It's a real shame that you had time to write such a poor untrue review but not enough time to speak to us first before leaving I think this must be a mistake or a joke !!!

Basic camp, bring a loo if you're in a stealth camper!

Liked: Out in the sticks. Wild rabbits. Starry skies. Got my van stuck in the mud and couldn't get to my pitch, would have been a crisis if not so funny. Owner brought a tractor to get me out! Had the site to myself and as a woman , I felt safe and calm. I've scored a 5 for facilities and amenities as felt unfair to mark down as they make the lack of very clear. Can't wait to come back, exactly the tonic to clear a busy head.

Disliked: Nothing! I will be back. - i don't want to mark 1 for child friendly but it won't let me amend. This site is for grown ups!!

Liked: Quiet location and good electric supply. Level pitches.

Disliked: Lack of signage on site, absence of welcome. Very boggy around electric posts and the grassed areas adjacent to the hard standing showed signs of vehicles getting stuck. The pitch next to us was also damaged. What we thought was the Elsan point was an abandoned refrigerated cake display. Site also used to park light commercial vehicles.

Liked: I really don't get it, How can an amazing place like this be so quiet, as in no one else here. For those of you with your own shower and toilet this has to be the ultimate place to stay where you have electric hook up and water at every pitch. Ok so its basically just a field with gravel hard standings, I wont say amazing but definitely lovely views, good space between the pitches and has to be one of, no has been the quietest place I have stayed so far this year. Its good and tidy has an Elsan point, there was a vending machine which was empty but I wouldn't have expected one at this type of site anyway, I think in another review someone had crumbled about this, really. If you want piece and quiet unless you are prepared to go wild camping in this country you wont find a better site I could be wrong ??? Some other points mentioned in reviews about the narrow lanes, well its the West Country, I'm lucky enough to live down here and yes we have lanes you've got to be prepared to have some of natures pin stripping on your vehicle if your going to come to such wonderful places as this, and that goes for Devon and Cornwall too. Back to the I don't get it part, I turned up on Friday great system for booking in and I was the only one on the site till I left on the Tuesday morning, you guys are missing out Big time. Ok the price for what you get maybe a little on the high side, you can get a lot more for the same on other sites, but not this level of piece and quiet. Is that worth paying for, well I will definitely be coming back so yes it is. One other point directions if you use the post code given to you by the owner in your confirmation email, it brings you to the site, except I do think it told me it was on the left when its on the right and not very far from the junction. Any self contained rigs not using this site, its your loss. Really this is it, good phone service well that's for Vodafone.

Local attractions

Underground rivers, limestone canyons and caves… in Cheddar (15 minutes’ drive), the gorge hike and ancient architecture are likely to impress. Stop by the cheese-making company while you’re there to find out more about the process of making the well-loved cheddar cheese. More caves (and tunnels, museums and a vintage penny arcade) can be found at the gorgeous Wookey Hole (25 minutes), but for a little of the city life, map out the way to Bristol (45 minutes) or Bath (an hour), the first an arts and culture hotspot and the second, the home to Roman baths, impressive architecture and other stunning landmarks. Sea on your mind instead? Jump onto a jet ski in Burnham-on-Sea (20 minutes), explore the dunes at the particularly pretty Brean Down (30 minutes) or try out windsurfing at Weston-super-Mare (30 minutes). With the Mendip Hills for peaceful walks, you might want to call by Wells (30 minutes) to visit its huge cathedral and wind down the pace before you head back to base.
