  • Glampsite with spectacular views to Glastonbury Tor on a Somerset farm
  • Glastonbury 10 minutes’ drive; 15 minutes to Wells; 20 to Wookey Hole
  • Luxury adults-only shepherd’s hut with private garden and mini-kitchen
Fancy somewhere cosy and comfy to stay in Somerset during Glastonbury Festival? Sitting on Pennard Hill above Sticklinch, The Lazy Shepherd is an immaculately maintained shepherd’s hut on a farm – an adults-only escape far from the madding crowd but only 10 minutes’ drive from the festival site in Pilton. (Festival-goers note: Gate D is about 45 minutes’ walk). Thanks to the spectacular views to Glastonbury Tor and the Quantock Hills, this fully insulated, private hut with its own fenced garden (secure for any accompanying dogs) overlooking open farmland, is indeed a find for visits any time of year. With a sheep-themed design as befits its name, the hut sleeps two, has a king-size bed and a sleek modern mini-kitchen with chiller fridge, kettle, toaster, electric oven and microwave. It’s heated by woodburner, and the exclusive-use shower room is a few short steps away. Please note at this juncture that there’s no TV or wifi – just bags of fresh air, a wooden deck to chill on and easy access to Mid Somerset walks and bike rides (there’s a chance of borrowing bikes from the owners). Oh, and as the hut is on a small diary farm, your only neighbours will be heifers in the adjacent yard in winter and grazing the fields in summer.

Local attractions

When you’re not hanging out with rock stars at the festival, there’s plenty to see and do in Mid Somerset. Scramble up to the chapel atop Glastonbury Tor, from where you’ll have views back to the glampsite, or head into Glastonbury town itself (both 10 minutes’ drive) to browse the hippy shops and explore the Saxon-era cathedral. There’s medieval landmarks to be visited in Wells (15 minutes), where you can admire the stone carvings and gargoyles on the facade of the 10th-century cathedral and tour the bishop’s palace. Walkers and cyclists have the choice of trails in the Mendip Hills (25 minutes) or Quantock Hills (50 minutes) Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and other sporty types can try abseiling, climbing and caving in Cheddar Gorge (35 minutes). Keep your binoculars handy for visits to RSPB Ham Wall (20 minutes) on the Somerset Levels to spot bitterns and kingfishers in the wetlands, and if you need a rainy-day idea (always possible in Somerset), head underground to see the stalactites and stalagmites in the cathedral-like show caverns at Wookey Hole (also 20 minutes).
