  • Wild camping on the spectacular West Penwith peninsula
  • A 15 minutes’ drive to Sennen Cove; 35 minutes to Tate St Ives
  • Nature walks direct from site; great spot for stargazing
Well, this is hardcore wild camping. Mt Bartinney Base Camp is an untamed, exposed and bumpy site best-suited to the most adventurous and dedicated of campers, located at the foot of Bartinney on the West Penwith peninsula in west Cornwall. The tent pitches are on uneven ground, but this is more than compensated for by being surrounded by grazing fields plus the west-facing ocean views – on a clear day, you'll get a glimmer of the Isles of Scilly on the horizon. If you tread carefully around the site, you might spot badgers, foxes, deer, stoats and rabbits as well as pheasants and birds of prey. And the sights often continue after dark – low levels of light pollution mean that this is an outstanding spot for some stargazing (the Milky Way is frequently visible on a clear night and it's a great location for watching events like meteor showers…) Talking of walking, there’s direct access to rambling territory from the site – sorry, no dogs allowed as livestock grazes nearby – and many guests head off to climb Bartinney (10 minutes’ walk) for far-reaching views across the peninsula. Although you are seriously off grid here, it’s actually only a handy hop into St Just (five minutes’ drive) to pick up bits and bobs for the barbecue, and there’s also a choice of tea rooms, pubs and takeaways if sparking up the grill seems too much like hard work. St Just is also home to sauna and shower facilities, as well as public toilets.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Absolutely stunning! The closest to wild camping you can possibly hope for. Campsite is really nice and care for... you can see that the owners look after the place, planting trees and protecting them with nets. This is just what I was looking for and I would love to go back again!

Disliked: Nothing to say here...

From the manager: Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a review and for the nice photos. The deers, rabbits, badgers, etc. would get to the trees if we didn't have the nets! We're glad you like our campsite and enjoyed your stay. Welcome back anytime!

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: It is exactly what is listed. Such a beautiful camp in a really quiet, secluded area. Really easy to access. Lots of room to pitch your tent. Watched the December sunset after pitching our tents and it was immensely peaceful. Fire pit was a real plus and made the difference. The owners are lovely and I wish them the best with this base camp! Would 100% return

Local attractions

West Penwith has many beautiful beaches, reached by a network of winding lanes. Check out the turquoise waters of Porthcurno (25 minutes’ drive), or join the South West Coast Path from Cape Cornwall (10 minutes). Nearby Sennen Cove (15 minutes) and Gwithian are the spots for catching a wave or two on your surfboard. Keep your eyes trained on the water at any local beach and you've got a chance of spotting seals swimming by. If you’d rather stick to dry land, arty types have plenty to keep themselves happy. Penzance and Newlyn (both 15 minutes) are both packed with artisan galleries showcasing glass, sculpture, handmade jewellery and landscape paintings. You can also browse contemporary art exhibitions at Tate St Ives (35 minutes). Thanks to Cornwall’s gentle summer temperatures, there are plenty of lush gardens to check out too. The National Trust-owned Trengwainton Garden (15 minutes) has acres of orchards and palm trees, and other options for an afternoon wandering among gorgeous landscapes include Tanglewood Wild Garden (10 minutes), Trewidden Garden (10 minutes) and Chygurno Gardens (25 minutes). At Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens (20 minutes), you can combine your love of flowers with a love of art by following the trail past pieces of wacky sculpture.
