  • Pick your own pitches at this back to basics camping field in Cornwall
  • A five-minute walk from Bude and the South West Coast Path
  • Spacious hilltop pitches; barbecues and dogs permitted
No frills but a splendid clifftop setting on the north Cornwall coast… pitches at Efford Down Campsite are in a sloping farm field that's great for family breaks. Located five minutes' walk from Bude and its independent shops, cafés and pubs, it's also within easy strolling distance of supermarkets for picking up self-catering supplies. There’s plenty to do outdoors too: a five-minute walk will see you surfing off Summerleaze beach, or you can potter down to Bude Sea Pool for a swim in less than 10 minutes. There’s also direct access to the South West Coast Path from the campsite, for action-packed days hiking headlands, or gentler ambles along Bude Canal and around the fishing harbour. But that’s not all – there are canoe and mountain bike rentals, pony trekking and golf courses all within a few minutes' drive, and you can try your hand at coasteering, sea kayaking and surf kayaking from local activity centres too. There are no designated pitches here, so you'll be able to choose your own camping spot from what’s available when you arrive in the gently sloping field. Simple facilities at the site include running water, toilets, showers and plenty of space to park cars by your pitch.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Great view of the town and has good facilities

Disliked: Limited spaces that are not on a noticeable incline. Sleeping in a double bed in a camper van was difficult because of this.

From the manager: Geddon My Dear, Cheers for your cracking review. We are very sorry that you did not notice the massive hill that the campsite is located on. I've got to ask... ave you been smoking some of this years hay with our farm hand Roderick? He said that has a new batch this year and it makes gatepost swinging extra enjoyable. Limited spaces??? Ere Rodders....we've got a wild one here

Liked: Closeness to the beach

Disliked: No hot water to wash up

From the manager: Geddon You! Thank you for coming to visit. I like to pop me washing up bowl under one of the shower cubicles to fill me bowl up. A bit of soap and clippings won't do no harm.. isn't that right Rodderick? Not sure what the kicking means. Each to their own! Come again x

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Close to beach and quiet location.

Disliked: Overpriced. It is basically just a field with portable showers and nothing else. I stupidly camped at the bottom of the field when it was raining heavily So can’t complain that the field is a massive slope when I pitched at the bottom of it. 😂😂😂😂 Two showers for women is not enough at all and washing up outside with only cold water !!! Yikes

From the manager: Geddon Penny! Firstly, I would like to say how please we are to ave you stayin with us. Secondly, I would like to say thank you for leaving your pop up beach tent that you stayed in throughout your stay. Roderick is now keeping his evil Guniea Pigs in it. Luckily the zip (pretty much the only thing) still works so the little blighters can leave my giant dandelions alone! Yes, pitching in a beach tent at the bottom of a hill on a wet week in Cornwall is not the cleverest place to camp. As we have non-allocated pitches and allow campers the freedom to choose where to pitch I must apologies sincerely and deeply for your choice. We really are very very sorry about that and take full responsibility. 'Two showers for women is not enough' Most of the women I know only need one and they are proper filthy!

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Peaceful location, your own choice of suitable pitch. Hot showers and flushing toilets. As for washing posts in cold water, boil your kettle and add to bowl...🤔 Great little site, very friendly people like a little community. Brilliant location near to town. 👍

Disliked: Nothing, it is was it is. A field for camping. That's what we wanted.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Geddon Paula! You are a wonderful and clever lady. filing a kettle and boiling cold water to make hot water... astounding! If only everyone was as beautiful and as clever as you. Pop over to the caravan if you run out of soap ;) Lots of love x

Local attractions

Around Bude, there are plenty of things to keep you busy. This pleasant resort has half a dozen different beaches to explore, with sandy spots, secluded coves, rockpools and the saltwater Bude Sea Pool to try out. Just out of town, you can escape the hustle and bustle at Widemouth Bay (five minutes' drive), or for a peaceful few hours of sport you could make a day of it at Bude and North Cornwall Golf Club (five minutes), where visitors are welcome. The South West Coast Path (five minutes' walk from base) has ample hiking opportunities for serious walkers (and less serious ones who fancy a shorter jaunt to some of north Cornwall's less accessible beaches). Good public transport services run along much of the route, making it possible to loop back to base in Bude by bus rather than walking the long way home. For families, this part of Cornwall has Tintagel Castle (35 minutes) with its connections to King Arthur; the village of Tintagel also has caves and a toy museum to keep the kids occupied. Alternatively, take them for a go on the rides, slides and flumes at Camel Creek Family Theme Park (50 minutes).
