  • Basic camping field adjoining a pub near Pickering in North Yorkshire
  • A 20-minute drive to Flamingo Land Resort; 40 to the beach at Whitby
  • All-day catering and brewery tours available at the pub
Like the sound of wild camping within staggering distance of a brew-pub? Pick yourself a pitch at The New Inn, a camping field in the North Yorkshire village of Cropton, on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors. Back to basics this campsite may be, with simple grass pitches sheltered by trees, but there are a fair few advantages thrown in to make life easy for you. For starters, there’s no need to worry about getting the stove going first thing in the morning, as breakfasts are available in the adjoining pub – what better way to start your day than with a full English and a decent cup of coffee or tea? And it's not just breakfast – delicious home-cooked dishes are served throughout the day (although if you prefer the self-catering route, barbecues are allowed on the pitches). You can also sample beers brewed at the bottom of the pub garden – tours of the brewery can be arranged with the owners on arrival at the site. Please note that facilities on site are fairly minimal – there are toilets and running water but no power, so bring torches with you from home so you can find the way back to your pitch from the pub at night.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: 1. Location 2. Quiet in the secluded tiny clearing (not on the bigger field though) 3. Pub on site

Disliked: 1. Excessive amount of dog poo. Unfortunately too many people weren't looking what they dog(s) were doing or didn't care, and there poo everywhere around our tent, more and more every day. Had to look every step which is extremely difficult with a giddy 4-year-old. 2. That's fine that there isn't a shower block, one can survice without it for a couple of days, but the state of the toilet block is really shouting for some work, for example fixing lights, and at least a few signs for telling people how to use toilets and doors appropriately. 3. Food in the pub is rather expensive for what it is. That is not to criticise the food itself because it was tasty. There was a confusion about the price of the breakfast too, signs in the toilet block said one price, staff in the pub said something far more expensive, so didn't try that.

Liked: Great site. Simple and clean and a stagger to the pub! Don't come if you want luxury, come if you want a chilled atmosphere! Also, the pub has great beers!

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: Nice large countryside field across the road from a micro-brewing pub!

Disliked: Just a suggestion to cut the grass in Campsite 2 which was almost a foot long and hard to define the outer boundaries and what was underfoot, with rope fencing midway through the field adding to the confusion of where to pitch.

Overall, not a bad site. Field 2 could benefit from a bit more care.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: Pubs great, some nice real locally brewed beer. Food is fantastic and the hosts are extremely helpful and welcoming. Well worth the price per night for camping.

Disliked: Field 2 camping, grass was a bit too long and there is evidence of dog owners letting their dogs ‘do their do’ and not clearing away the mess.

Local attractions

Camping at The New Inn puts you in prime position for exploring the North Yorkshire Moors on two legs or two wheels. You could even try travelling under steam, as trains on the vintage North Yorkshire Moors Railway leave from Pickering (10 minutes’ drive) and stop at Goathland (half an hour – and as seen in the Harry Potter films) on their way to the East Yorkshire coast. This is also a great base for families, as the thrill rides and animal encounters of Flamingo Land Resort (20 minutes) should easily keep everybody entertained all day. To run off any excess energy, spend a day on the high ropes and Segway trails at Go Ape Dalby (25 minutes), or let the kids loose on the beach at Whitby (40 minutes) or Scarborough (45 minutes). To add some culture into the mix, visit the Gothic-era minster and see how the Vikings lived at JORVIK Viking Centre in historic York (45 minutes), or mug up on World War II events at Eden Camp Modern History Museum (20 minutes). Closer to base, Pickering Castle (10 minutes) offers up exhibitions in the chapel along with wonderful views over the moors.
