  • Well-maintained site on the outskirts of Hornsea, in East Yorkshire
  • Burton Agnes Hall 20 minutes’ drive; The Deep aquarium 40 minutes
  • Shower and toilet facilities; dogs welcome; barbecues allowed
The beaches of East Yorkshire and the long-distance Trans Pennine Trail are at your fingertips at Northorpe, a family- and dog-friendly site on the B1242 road, less than one mile from the coastal town of Hornsea. After parking right next to your pitch on a well-maintained tree-lined field, you can head to the seaside, which is a half-hour walk away if you want to swing into town to buy sunscreen and buckets and spades; shorter (about 10 minutes), if you cut through the fields. Popular for swimming and watersports, Hornsea Beach is skirted by a long promenade with family-friendly amusements like a paddling pool, the Jump Around Inflata-park and arcades. There’s also a lawn where you can stop for fish and chips. Those who are travelling without children might want to challenge themselves to hike (or cycle) along the Trans Pennine Trail (look for the marker on the promenade). You don’t have to go all the way to Southport, but with the right shoes (and the right attitude), you might make it to Hull in about four hours (one hour by bike); you can catch a train to return to the coast. Back at the site, you can shower and get ready for dinner. How does a barbecue sound? If you don’t fancy making your own meals, there are plenty of eateries and pubs serving food in Hornsea. The site also has a toilet block and a washing-up area.

Power optional grass caravan site

Liked: Toilets was clean, site wasn’t far to the beach. Big grass area where kids could play.

Disliked: Wasn’t very friendly, kept to our own devices. Showers was very slow. Have to walk to other side of park for a shower.

Power optional grass caravan site

Liked: Quiet and some sheltered spots. Not busy at all.

Disliked: Toilet facilities are not adequate and were dirty during our stay. The pitch was muddy and soggy field. One familiy’s tent was in a puddle and their car was stuck. Lots of work going on and generally a bit unkept round the edges. Not friendly either.

Owner was so helpful and even though so muddy, still kept it clean.

Power optional grass caravan site

Liked: Friendly owners, lovely basic pitch, large pitches lots of space. Was warned about noisy campers but had no issues. Even though it rained and was very muddy still had a lovely time. Youngest Daughter loved seeing the peacock that roams the site.

Power optional grass caravan site

Liked: Really friendly, down-to-earth owners who were helpful and made us feel welcomed; even the peacock seemed friendly. The campsite was great for our kids who had space to play and explore. A straightforward site, with clean toilets/showers/washing up area.

Power optional grass caravan site

Liked: good size pitch in a field

Disliked: had to wait for someone to appear at reception that told us where to pitch up and said she’d let us pitch and settle before asking for full payment, she appeared not ten minutes later asking for payment mid pitching, while trying to surprise the kiddos (9,7,3 and 1 years old) with a projector/film evening no wifi and mobile signal was too poor to connect, unable to use a heater in the tent as it tripped the electric hook up, facilities are incredibly poor with only one female toilet on the site, as beautiful as a peacock is they are incredibly loud and a 3am wake up from a squawking peacock is not my idea of relaxing get away, nothing for children to do on site no play areas etc, beach is not a ten minute walk away it’s atleast a 10-15 minute drive, very unwelcoming staff that very clearly have favourites with regulars and those who store their caravans all year round as we clearly didn’t fit the bill for the clientele they prefer to have on site, upon leaving the site to go to the beach or town centre we would return to closed gates weather in the day or evening and have to get out of the car to open then close them behind us, and staff using a digger etc throughout the day, all in all definitely not that suitable for young families as there’s nothing to do, owner very judgemental when you don’t fit in to their ideals and to be honest hornsea isn’t that great so would have been brill with better facilities/amenities/entertainment on site

From the manager: Thank you for your comments and leaving when asked to do so. Foul and threatening language is not acceptable on this site, especially when young children are involved. We asked you politely after several complaints from others on site to curb your language, leaving was probably the best response. Regards Northorpe.

Power optional grass caravan site

Liked: Amazing stay at Northorpe with my partner and 4 year old cockapoo. Peaceful surrounding area, lots of space for my dog to run around. Amazing host. Would defiantly return, only 3/5 minute drive into Hornsea and 5 minute drive to skirlington market. No wifi or signal but wasn’t a problem for us. Clean facilities.

Local attractions

If you’ve ever wanted to handle a furry tarantula or an exotic snake, Bugtopia Hornsea Zoo (five minutes’ drive) might make your dreams come true. At this centre focusing on tropical creatures, you can also feed colourful macaws, and get up close and personal with insects and lizards. A masterpiece of Tudor architecture, Burton Agnes Hall (20 minutes) houses a collection of French Impressionist paintings, plus tapestries, furniture and ceramics. On a good day, though, you might prefer to hang in the grounds, which include a walled garden with thousands of plants and several gigantic games (snakes and ladders and chess among them). One of the highlights in the city of Hull (40 minutes) is The Deep, a vast aquarium in a striking angular building on the estuary of the Humber river. Residents here range from sharks and piranhas to penguins and turtles, plus tropical snakes and poison frogs.
