  • Peaceful and sheltered adults-only site on a working farm
  • A 15-minute drive from Buxton; Bakewell 20 minutes
  • A few minutes' walk from a traditional country pub and the river Dove
Small in size but big on views – that’s the fine mix on offer at Crowdecote Campsite, an adults-only farm site in the Peak District National Park near the little village of Crowdecote. Green fields, trees and hills are all around at this quiet Derbyshire site, and local beauty spots like the river Dove, Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill are all within comfortable walking distance. Facilities on site are low-key so as not to detract from these peaceful surrounds, but essentials like a toilet, shower, running water and chemical disposal are all provided (the shower has hot water but please note there's no hot water elsewhere). This rural spot is also home to a herd of friendly cattle and their pygmy goat pals Kenny and Dave, all of whom can be seen in fields by the site. Dogs are welcome here, but please keep them on a lead and under control – this is a working farm, after all. Firepits are also welcome, and firewood is available to purchase on site. You'll need to keep all fires/barbecues in a steel container that's raised off the ground (please don't light fires on the ground or try to construct a firepit out of stones). Looking for something to make that view even nicer? A friendly country pub is a short walk away and a handy local bus service to Buxton and Ashbourne stops just opposite the pub, so you won't necessarily need a car for local hill walks (and you can also head straight out to Dragon's Back or Chrome Hill on a footpath from the site). The next village over is Longor (just over a mile away), where there's a café, bar and well-liked local chip shop.

Liked: Lovely location , site quiet, perfect place to go to relax, pub down the road.

Disliked: Site facilities basic but ok , most grass pitches are on a slope but you are in the hills of derbyshire.

Liked: A great back to basics campsite, not many of these left but with everything needed for a two night stay with exceptional views of the Derbyshires Dragons back. Made very welcome on our arrival. Would highly recommend if planning a trip to the area.

Liked: The surrounding scenery is very pretty.

Disliked: Directly under a flight path with multiple planes both day and night. Also on a very badly maintained track road filled with huge potholes that has farm traffic constantly up and down it including after midnight. No peace very loud. The facilities are poor, with only 2 toilets and showers for men and women despite a large campsite. Not kept clean. Pitches also small, trying to squeeze the most amount of people into small areas.

From the manager: So here we are, right on the tail end of silly season, and we've come out relatively unscathed. But there's always one ready to deliver a swift kick in the plums! Let's break down Mr Scott's horrendous experience. "Directly under a flight path" - Yes, the entire Peak District is directly under the approach path to Manchester Airport. This would be the same experience literally anywhere else in the Peak District. "On a very badly maintained track road filled with huge potholes" - That's the highway, you probably don't get that down south but up here the roads are a shocking mess EVERYWHERE and any request to the Council/Highways Department seems to be ignored. Ultimately though, its not our fault, but you'll be well aware of that. It's just another tenuous reason to give us a kick. "farm traffic constantly up and down it including after midnight" - Is it though? Really Mr Scott? I'll give you a pass on that two fields were baled and collected next to the Campsite while you were here but that was in the day and you weren't even on site. You're in a Farming landscape, guess what kind of activity there is in a Farming landscape.... Farming! The road isn't a "main artery" so has very little traffic as is stated in many other reviews. Farm traffic after midnight, I very much doubt that. "No peace very loud" - Moron "The facilities are poor, with only 2 toilets and showers for men and women despite a large campsite" - This is a VERY misleading statement so lets put some effort into straightening this one out. There's 4 Toilets and 4 Showers. We were around half capacity or less during your stay. If it was as horrendous as you're implying surely we would be snowed under with complaints given that we've been fully booked for the majority of the High Season and every weekend throughout the year so far. "Not kept clean" - Cleaned every day, I'm getting a bit bored of this silliness now but lets soldier on. "Pitches also small, trying to squeeze the most amount of people into small areas" - And finally we get to it. This is the real reason we've received this scathing review. Pitch sizes are stated clearly AND pictured in our listing. They're very generous UNLESS you try to squeeze the biggest tent you possibly can into one and/or pitch your unit poorly. In Mr Scotts case he pitched his enormous tent sideways into the pitch with his entrance door right on the edge of the adjacent pitch which was fine until a Campervan pitched next door and all he could see was a van. Who's the Goose? If he'd pitched front to back he would have been absolutely fine. The reason he didn't do this was because he wanted to get his car onto the pitch too, despite having the option to park just 10 feet away thus giving himself much more room. Why so keen to squeeze the car on the pitch? Because on two occasions I caught him charging his car off the EHU which we don't allow. "Disappointing and not as good as alternatives in the area" - So I've taken the liberty of looking into this for you. You've not left any reviews for these "better alternatives" so I'm guessing you've not actually stayed at any other Campsites in the area. This was quite possibly your first time Camping. But lets say you were looking.... You don't want a Campsite near a road, you want Commercial Grade facilities with Toilets and Showers, you want a Grass EHU Pitch bigger than the ones we provide, you need "Dogs Allowed", you don't want to be near a farm, you'll be looking for somewhere thats rated 9 or higher, and I expect you want it all for £25 on an unmetered Hookup.... I'm going to leave out "air traffic" because thats going to give us zero results in the Peak District.. And a quick Pitchup search reveals.... well would you believe it! Still nothing! It turns out that our EHU pitch sizes are pretty standard if not on the larger side. Most of the Commercial Campsites are within a stones throw of an A-road and/or on a Farm. Most Commercial Campsites are struggling to get ratings above 9 because they attract the Fussy Britches Brigade and £25 per night unmetered is an absolute steal! So my parting thoughts on this one are.... jog on! The commercial Campsites are welcome to your custom and trying to pander to your unrealistic whimsies.... or maybe consider a Premier Inn :) Kind Regards Steve@CC

Liked: Beautiful site, friendly owner, simple but clean facilities, and an excellent location! Pitches were flat and nicely spaced. This is a lovely small campsite for those who prefer a quieter place, and the walks you can do straight from your tent are breathtaking, particularly the one to Chrome Hill. Warm showers were much appreciated!

Unpowered grass site (adults only)

Liked: Friendly welcome, clean loos and free showers, they loaned us a fire pit free of charge, gave good advice about a walk, beautiful location, quiet place to stay.

Disliked: It’s a shame how expensive camping has become… but I know that’s not necessarily down to the owners.

From the manager: Just to clarify.... Eight pounds each per night is what it cost to camp here for these two. In Peak Season during the week after Bank Holiday Weekend. After Pitchup fees we got about £6.80 of that £8! Included with this were free-to-use showers. The free loan of a Firepit A pub 200m down the road An idealic, peaceful location with footpaths straight out of the gate. To put that into perspective.... 2 x Pints in the pub £8-£10 Cost of fuel to get here and back home around £20 minimum plus the driving around while here. Eating out £25 per person per meal realistically. Parking in a local Car Park for 4 hours around £4-£5 2 x Meal Deals from Tesco for Dinner £6.80! Come on guys, we're one of the cheapest Campsites in the area and, for what you get in return, it's an absolute bargain. You're also well aware of the cost in advance, so please don't make a booking then attend and mark us down because you wanted it cheaper. I think maybe a reality check is in order here.

Liked: The site was very well managed and organised. We loved the beautiful location and views. It was very peaceful, other campers were very respectful and there was no noise from other pitches. Lots of great walks right from the site. If you wanted to explore by car we found Bakewell, although busy was worth a visit. The Pack Horse Inn in the village was really welcoming with great beer and fantastic food.

Disliked: Nothing!

Liked: Well-organised and welcoming host. Hot showers and good toilet / washing up facilities. Beautiful surroundings and a lovely pub with veggie options a 3-minute walk away. No kids, so a calm vibe. A smaller site, but great value for money. My friend and I chose this place because, when searching, we found Steve's responses to other reviews to be delightfully entertaining. We were not disappointed.
