  • Secure, semi-primitive camping in woodland near Daingerfield, Texas
  • A 10-minute drive to Daingerfield State Park; Jefferson 40 minutes
  • Peaceful forest sites with firepits; volleyball court for guest use
Ready for some serious northeast Texas backcountry camping? And semi-wild at that, with pitches scattered through 10 acres of pine and deciduous forest and close to a stream? Then get yourself down to Barefoot Gee’s, a wilderness campsite in the Piney Woods region, five minutes’ drive from grocery shops, takeaways and fast-food joints in Daingerfield. A short distance from the quiet waters of Lone Star Lake and tucked among the trees, each off-grid pitch is equipped with a firepit, a grill and outdoor tables and seating. Bring your family – dogs included – for a back-to-nature camping experience with lots of running around, outdoor games and friendly goats to keep you company on your woodland rambles. Guests are welcome to bring mountain bikes, small four wheelers or dirt bikes for use on the property's raw trails. There's also plenty of room for parking a boat, trailers and toy haulers inside secure parking, and someone can shuttle you to destinations with a bit of advance warning. While you’re exploring, keep a lookout for wild animals and birds – you might spot the resident bald eagle, or raccoons and red foxes. The pitches are all private and secure, with lots of space between each one for even more seclusion in nature. No need to worry about your camping gear if you leave for the day, as the site is gated and fenced. Playground equipment is available on request. For further entertainment, there's a volleyball court, and there's also a tin barn to shelter in bad weather. Bottled water and small-amperage electric cords are available on site for a small fee. For ample amenities, visit Longview (40 minutes' drive) or Tyler (an hour and 10 minutes). The site is 140 miles northeast of Dallas.

Local attractions

There's fishing and watersports action close by on Lone Star Lake (there's a boat ramp a minute's drive away, with space for swimming too), but if you’re looking for more outdoor adventures, try hiking, birding or geocaching in Daingerfield State Park (10 minutes’ drive), which also has a tree-ringed lake for swimming and fishing. Lake Bob Sandlin State Park (40 minutes) has hiking and mountain-biking trails as well as weekend ranger walks – and the autumn foliage is a spectacular swathe of gold and red. The fishing lake in Caddo Lake State Park (an hour) has more than 70 species, and you can hire canoes to paddle several looped river trails. If the kids need to run off any more energy, there are waterslides and inflatable climbing courses on the lake in Lone Star City Park (five minutes’ drive). If they deserve a treat, head for Lonesome Dove Drive Thru Safari (35 minutes) to see zebras and camels or feed goats in the petting zoo. To get a feel for Texas history, Jefferson (40 minutes) is a photogenic pre-Civil War town with lots of historic buildings to tour, and heritage displays at the Jefferson Historic Museum, housed in the former red-brick post office.
