  • Remote mountaintop campground with three dog-friendly acres of space
  • A 40-minute drive from hikes on Max Patch and the town of Marshall
  • Picnic bench and fire ring; a small store 20 minutes’ drive away
After picking up the property in the 1960s, the family that owns Troublesome Gap Camping and Overlanding camped, hiked, hunted and cut firewood many weekends on the mountaintop. Those good times led them to open up three acres of space for new folk. Those lucky guests have the whole three acres to themselves – and what a spot it is… In a remote area of Hot Springs in North Carolina, it just so happens that the nearest neighbour is around half a mile away. The space is 4000 feet above sea level, so it experiences cooler temperatures. It’s also easily accessible from the public Baltimore Branch Road (although steep in places, so no RVs bigger than a pop-up campervan will be able to reach it). There’s tons of space here – and with that, peace and quiet abound. Water and a portable toilet are provided, as is a firepit, for keeping you warm as you spy on the local wildlife or watch the sunrise over one side of Troublesome Gap and set on the other. There’s a circular drive for two pop-up campers, teardrops or square drops, and plenty of spots to set up tents or string up a hammock. This is a remote spot, of course, so the nearest supermarket is an hour’s drive away. Still, that doesn’t mean you will be without the basic supplies. There’s a small shop with a restaurant and a petrol station 20 minutes’ drive away, plus a handy burger joint (15 minutes’ drive) on the way there. All the gorgeous landscapes might have you itching to get hiking too. If so, the bald mountain of Max Patch, so-called due to its clearing for pasture use back in the 1800s, forms part of the gorgeous Appalachian National Scenic Trail. It’s a 40-minute drive away.

Local attractions

Pack a picnic for your hike on the Max Patch (40 minutes’ drive) mountain, which has views of Mount Mitchell and the Great Smoky Mountains. Pisgah National Forest (an hour and 20 minutes) is in the same area, and another stunning spot for the keen hikers to get out, soak in the scenery and tackle a trail. Or perhaps you’re after more of an urban day out. If so, try the art galleries, art classes, concerts and shows – most of them about the local mountain culture – in Marshall (40 minutes). Historic downtown Marshall has a few intriguing spots too, including an old county courthouse. The city of Asheville (an hour) has just as strong of an arts scene, especially in its Downtown Art District, and there’s a gorgeous set of historical landmarks like the Basilica of Saint Lawrence and the 19th-century Biltmore estate.
