Want to experience Africa outdoor style: the sunsets, the woodsmoke, the calls of the hyenas…? Less sure about washing in a bowl and being somebody’s lunch? Dilemma solved at Ngorongoro Forest Tented Lodge, an outstanding spot 40 minutes' drive from Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater, where nights under canvas are craftily fused with the fab comforts of a safari lodge. The crater, 12 miles across with its floor lying about 7,500 feet below the forest, is home to the world’s highest density of lions, as well as wildebeest, zebra, gazelles and buffalo, whose annual migrations make an unforgettable sight from the rim of the crater. Down in the blue-green grasslands, meanwhile, there are excellent odds of spotting lions, cheetahs, leopards and elephants. Back at base, expect restful nights under a canopy of acacia trees and bright mornings breakfasting on your private verandah. Finer vistas are on offer from the balcony of the restaurant: bring your binoculars to breakfast and you might end up there for lunch and dinner too (actually not a problem in this full-board establishment). It’s year-round growing in this fertile region, so the food is always fresh and local, and when you’ve filled your boots in the evenings, go and sit round the communal campfire to watch traditional dances. The team is happy to organise excursions in the surrounding area... and after days out in the wild, what better way to unwind than in the Jacuzzi...

Local attractions

Whether the great migrations are ongoing or not, the views from Ngorongoro's crater rim are tremendous and the wildlife down in the centre so close it’s nearly unreal. To combine watching with walks, climb the Olmoti volcano two hours’ drive away, or hike down the smaller Empakaai crater (two and a half hours) ending up among flapping meadows of pink flamingos at the lake. Lake Manyara National Park, half an hour away, makes a good intro to Africa’s wilderness: though compact, its diverse bush plains, baobab-dotted crags and hot springs make a haven for pelicans and yellow-billed storks as well as some dangerously talented tree-climbing lions. Take a boat cruise or a canoe safari and you might glide past hippos and crocs as well. Humans are the main interest at Lake Eyasi (an hour and 20 minutes): the Tindiga and Hadzabe bushmen live a hunter gatherer lifestyle unchanged for aeons, but welcome visitors from the modern world who come to see the tribespeople gathering honey, hunting with handmade weapons and performing dances (almost) as old as the hills. To head further back into the human past, make the hour and half trip to Olduvai Gorge and its museum: see where the earliest evidence of human life and toolmaking was unearthed amid an impressive ravine.
