  • Adults-only bubble rooms with transparent ceilings and telescopes
  • Outdoor activities in the surrounding countryside; falls further out
  • Privacy created by a fully-fenced private garden; breakfast included
If you’ve ever dreamed of stargazing late into the evening and falling asleep on a bed under the night sky, make your next destination Zielo Las Beatas. Halfway between Madrid and Valencia in peaceful Villahermosa, this adults-only retreat is rather special. The glamping accommodation here isn’t your typical bell tent or shepherd’s hut. Instead, you’ll stay in a bubble room with a transparent, panoramic roof… Each pod is named after an astronomer – Halley, Kepler, Galileo and Copernicus, for example – but you’ll be next to take on the title. That’s because each pod has its own electric telescope so that you can count the constellations after sunset. Although the pods may be transparent, that doesn’t mean you don’t have sufficient privacy. Each unit has its own fully-fenced private garden and the fences are opaque so that no one can see you from the outside. There’s a full bathroom attached to the bubble room, kitted out with a shower (with even more views of the sky, in case you forget about those stars or clouds above), a hairdryer, amenities and a bathrobe and slippers. Breakfast in your bubble is included, as is private parking. However, if you’re keen to break out into the surrounding La Mancha countryside (which is at an altitude of 1000 metres, far from noise and pollution, hence such an excellent location for stargazing), there are activities such as horse riding, diving baptism, a guide four-wheel drive excursion, kayaking and paddleboarding out there.

Local attractions

Being tucked away in the countryside (and making the most of its outdoor activities) is part of the appeal of this place. Further afield, the nature theme continues… Catch a huge waterfall on a hike to Cascada del Hundimiento (40 minutes’ drive) or follow the Roman road through Despeñaperros Natural Park (an hour and 45 minutes). Los Calares del Mundo y de la Sima Natural Park (an hour and 45 minutes) has another gorgeous waterfall. Closer by, Lagunas de Ruidera Natural Park (45 minutes) is just as splendid, with 15 little lagoons and a chain of waterfalls ready to be tracked down. If you prefer to relax with a glass of red in your hand, there are several bodegas (wine cellars) around. There are several around Valdepeñas (45 minutes), including La Bodega de las Estrellas (45 minutes), a traditional winery with clay walls and oak barrels. As for those of you who want to take in some of the historic sites in La Mancha, one place is the military museum at Alcázar de San Juan (an hour and 20 minutes), which is actually based inside a 16th-century palace. Albacete (an hour and 20 minutes) is another: it has a Gothic cathedral.
