  • Rural site in a pine forest two kilometres from Martín del Río
  • Good climbing in the surrounding mountains and climbing tower on site
  • Restaurant serving local dishes – both full meals and tapas
One could almost imagine one is in the Wild West among all this spectacular Spanish scenery. (And one should, pardner, one should, as inventiveness should be very much indulged in while on hols). Rural Camping Las Cabañas is in a sunny and remote part of Spain, a couple of kilometres from the old village of Martin Del Rio, in the Aragonese mountains. Rush to this traditional part of the country for golden opportunities hiking and climbing among the mountains surrounding the site, or use it as a base for getting around the archaeological sites, UNESCO-listed architecture and remote landscapes of the Teruel Province. Or you – or more likely, your mini cowboys and cowgirls – could imagine they're fearless palaeontologists (or if they're really teeny/imaginative, actual dinosaurs), as this region has been known for yonks as a productive area for dino fossil hunters: see some of their finds in the Galve Paleontology Museum or head to the  Dinópolis theme park for a more chucklesome take on the subject. Back at the homestead, there's no need to explore far when you need to venture forth for some tucker, as the site comes with its own restaurant serving tapas and full meals, and has communal barbecues where you can cook up your own grub. To work up an appetite, challenge the kids to a clamber up the Cabañas climbing tower (loser washes up), or have a hike around the roomy grounds and among the trees of this spacious pine forest site. Other facilities include a games room and a playground. There's also a free wifi zone.

Local attractions

The remote Teruel Province is the least populated in Spain (its eponymous city is the only provincial capital in peninsular Spain not to have a direct train line to Madrid, fact fans) – which makes it a splendid setting for make-pretend games starring your own adventurous self as a valiant cowboy or cowlady. Stride off into the site surrounds on the nearby hiking trails, or go the whole hog and dangle around the via ferrata climbing routes from Huesa del Común, half an hour's drive to the north. You'll also need to set off for a lengthy explore of famed Albarracín, the ancient town lauded by many as the most beaut in the entire country, as it looks like it's been pretty much unchanged since medieval times. If you desire to dig into the dinosaur history of the region, the splendid Galve Paleontológico Museo or Galve Palaeontology Museum is about 25 minutes' drive away, covering critters like Aragosaurus, Galveosaurus and Gideonmantellia that roamed these parts 150 to 200 million years ago. Dino fans will also want to take the several routes of the Parque Paleontológico de Galve to see dinosaur replicas and real-scale dig reconstructions; marvel at the bones of the huge sauropod dinosaur at Dinópolis Legendark, and spend as much time as possible at spectacular Dinópolis Teruel, the main park of the region with one of the biggest – and rarest – collection of dinosaurs remains in the world.
