  • Between southern Slovakia and Hungary 100 metres from the River Ipel
  • About 30 minutes' drive from the UNESCO-listed village of Hollókö
  • Fully-equipped outdoor kitchen plus communal campfire area
If you’re fond of ravishing river views (and who isn’t?), there's not far to go to see them from southern Slovakia’s Camping Moongarden. It's only 100 metres from the Ipel, the winding waterway that bumps up against the Hungarian border in the Veľký Krtíš District… so you can tick sights from two countries off your list during your trip. And as for what to tick off during your stay at this peaceful place? You could spot rare birds from a clever vantage point, meander among the surrounding meadows… or hire a bike and set off on a cycle ride to the nearby town of Szécsény. The friendly Dutch couple who run the site are happy to share their top tips on places to go when you’re not settling under the sun with a page-turner on the lawn. The site has a fully-equipped outdoor kitchen with a comfy sitting area. And once your feast’s ready? Sit around the communal campfire to swap travel stories over your treats.

Disliked: Nichts

Local attractions

Camping Moongarden’s in an almost traffic-free area less than a half an hour by car from the UNESCO-registered village of Hollókö. Catch it when a folk festival’s in full swing and you’ll see locals from the Palóc tribe dancing around the village in their traditional clothes. To pick up snacks for the journey, there’s a supermarket just over a 10-minute drive away in Szécsény, sitting right by the Forgách Castle Museum with its 150,000 artefacts. Wanderers might want to while away a day walking between the ancient sites and valleys of Novohrad – Nógrád Geopark, another UNESCO-listed favourite less than an hour’s drive from the site. A bit further away in the opposite direction, you'll find the colourful rooftops of Banská Štiavnica, a town built inside a massive caldera in central Slovakia.
