  • Leafy site in the spectacular Serra da Estrela Natural Park valley
  • A half-hour drive from Covilhã and 45 minutes from Guarda and Fundão
  • Bar-restaurant, barbecue area and a shop selling local farm produce
What do you say to valley views, looming peaks, wildlife watching and shaded nooks to settle into and unwind? If that conjures a ‘yes, please,’ then make immediate tracks for the nature-filled Parque Campismo Rural – Vale do Beijames, a family-friendly site 20 minutes’ drive from the scenic Guarda-district town of Manteigas. The site’s in a pretty valley in Serra da Estrela Natural Park, the biggest natural conservation area in Portugal, so expect to see mountaintops over the trees, hear the rush of water from the river less than 200 metres away and find hiking and biking trails through the mountain range within easy reach. Amateur zoologists may even be lucky enough to encounter wolves, bears, otters and foxes, while eagles and kites soar overhead. The site’s less than an hour from Portugal’s only ski resort too, where – if weather cooperates – there are 18 slopes to speed down (from green circle to black diamond), glam gourmet picnics to sign up for and snowshoe hikes to partake in. Visiting when the powder hasn’t started piling up? Ignore the ski slopes and hike the slopes of Portugal’s highest mountain, Torre, instead. All that exploring is hungry work, so retreat to the site and clamber into a stool at the bar for some eats, or buy some local farm products from the small shop to sort the self-catered option on the outdoor barbecues. Rest weary legs by finding a secluded spot in the forest to devote some time to that holiday reading, or simply curl up for an afternoon siesta...

Local attractions

When nature becomes too much and a city day is needed, Covilhã is half an hour’s drive from base and a must for getting a good feel for the history of the area. There are plenty of museums to visit, including a fabric museum and a cheese museum (and yes, there’s a cheesy tasting), as well as shops to wander and a spectacular spot for views over the city and back towards Serra da Estrela. Not enough city time? Fundão and Guarda are both within 45 minutes, so head to the former for more museums and the latter for a cathedral, a tower and a castle. Castles are fairly popular around here actually: the 11th-century Castelo de Linhares da Beira is an hour away, as are Castelo de Celerico da Beira and Sabugal Castle, and the first-century Roman villa of Centum Cellas is 25 minutes from base. The particularly pretty village of Castelo Novo is 50 minutes away, and worth the drive for its history (people have been living here for millennia), its cobbled streets and its stone buildings.
