  • Riverside glamping in the Serra da Estrela natural park
  • A 25-minute drive to Guarda; horse riding and guided hikes available
  • Restaurant, bar, swimming pool, yoga space and vegetable garden
‘A mountain range of stars’ is how the name of the Serra da Estrela natural park translates – and what a fittingly poetic name it is for this gorgeous part of the Guarda area. It is, after all, a place that has much in the way of mountain peaks, and little by way of light pollution… and as a result there are rewarding views all around by day and night. Up in the northern reaches of the park is Senses Camping, a peaceful glampsite run by an international crew of staff on a four-hectare olive oil production farm a couple of kilometres from the teeny village of Faia. As you may well imagine, this is a splendid spot for rural hikes – there are plenty of trails in the area, and weary walkers can cool off after their endeavours by paddling in the river by the farm, or taking a dip in its chlorine-free pool. For a different perspective on your park surroundings, head out for paragliding and climbing trips or have a chat with the folk on site to see what they can sort in terms of horse riding, guided hikes and archery sessions. Musing on what you’ve seen can be done at the meditation space or during a yoga class; you might also find it brings inspiration for a masterpiece during one of the site’s art sessions. Fuelling all this healthy activity is a restaurant that serves up meals made from fruits and veg grown on site, supplemented by other locally sourced ingredients. If you’re sorting your own provisions, your best bet is the city of Guarda, a 25-minute drive away.
