  • Laid-back and super-friendly site on the Šiauliai-to-Riga road
  • A short drive to the spectacular Hill of Crosses
  • Fishing in the lake next door, plus homemade cider for sale
Might a laid-back atmos, a mega friendly and knowledgeable (not to mention cider-making) owner, an annual art and music festival and heaps of smashing scenery be the sort of surrounds and vibe you’re after for your next Central European sojourn? If you add to the above a setting right next to the Šiauliai to Riga road – making overnight stop offs when journeying between Scandinavia and Central Europe (and vice versa) somewhat of a cinch – it'll most likely win you over to the idea of a stay at Sunny Nights Camping. If you’re a seasoned cyclist, you'll be niftily set for the likes of pedalling all the way out to Hill of Crosses, 20 kilometres from base, or birdwatching at Gedžiūnų Miško Biosphere Polygon, almost exactly the same distance away. If you’re not so strong on two wheels but still fancy the idea of a scenic bike ride to somewhere pretty, then the 19th-century Jakiškiai Manor is an fine four kilometres away. Also from here, the small yet spectacular Žagarė Regional Park 40 minutes by car. There’s lots on site to help you relax: fishing in the little lake next door, lazing in the hammock while looking aloft at the clouds, or treating yourself to serene wanders around the apple orchard (especially lush and strollsome when in blossom during springtime); if cider’s your tipple of choice, then you’ll probably also be quite excited to discover that the appley batch made by Saulilus (the site’s super amenable owner) is available to buy here too – spot on for evening quaffs around the campfire, which has been craftily set up with lots of log seating for highly social evening soirées. To float the boats of artful types and musicheads, the site hosts its popular annual art and music festival – "Sunny Nights" – in August, to which creative sorts of all leanings flock from all over for a spell of laid back culture and lots of wholesome cider-fuelled fun.

Local attractions

Cycling fans, get geared up for pedals out to several scenic spots: for those looking for an easy jaunt from the site, Jakiškiai Manor – a manor farmstead that's home to one of Lithuania's oldest parks – is a fine four kilometres away. If you’re a pro pedaller, then a 20-kilometre bike ride out to Hill of Crosses should be a cinch... And what might one expect from somewhere with such a name? Well, it is exactly what it’s called: it’s a spookily spectacular pilgrimage site atop a hill that’s been spiked with tons and tons of crosses, and thus a highly recommended spectacle worth squeezing in. For an urbanised day out, Šiauliai – Lithuania’s fourth-largest city – is 28 kilometres away; head here for strolls along its main street, Vilniaus gatvė, punctuated by sits in bars or on café terraces after taking a peek into one of several museums dedicated to the likes of bikes, cats, photography and trains. If you’re into your sporting history, then the basketball museum over in Joniškis, 10 kilometres from Sunny Nights, is worth the trip over to. Nature nurturers will find the Gedžiūnų Miško Biosphere Polygon Žagarė to be a tiptop spot eyeballing eagles and other such feathered specimens, or the neatly packaged eight kilometre-long Žagarė Regional Park is 40 minutes by car for views across the Švėtė valley, the Žiemgalė plains and kilometres upon kilometres of forested land.
