  • Family-run site by a lake and river with mountain views
  • Just off the T50, a 25-minute drive from Corte, Aléria and the coast
  • Family-run farm site with fresh seasonal produce available
With sweeping sandy beaches, a cracking climate and magical mountain peaks, Corsica is definitely a frontrunner for the title of prettiest isle in all the Med. And Camping Ernella, a small farm site in the Haute-Corse region, is a top contender for those looking to soak up all those lush island landscapes, located as it is just off the speedy T50 road. Around 25 minutes' drive from both the coast and the tourist towns of Corte and Aléria, this handily-located site is ensconced in a wooded area next to a river and lake. You can expect to find a fair bit of space at this four-hectare farm, where there are also cute animals like donkeys to meet (and ride, if you're up for a stint in the saddle). Camping Ernella's waterside location is another big plus, as stays here can be combined with generous helpings of aquatic activities like outdoor swimming, kayak trips and river rafting. Fishing can also be sorted here – just stop for a chat with the site owners before casting off. There's also plenty to keep gourmand guests amused here: while the kids splash around like wild things, grownups can savour sophisticated moments sampling farm-made cheeses (including tasty local tomme and brocciu when available). As is common knowledge, gooey dairy products are even better when slathered on a bit of crusty bread – and yes, that can be bought here too.

Local attractions

If ever a patch was destined to be pictured on a postcard, it's Corte (25 minutes' drive). Set in the geographical centre of the island, this fortress town was once run by Pascal Paoli, the wartime leader of the Corsican independence movement in the 18th century. Things are a fair bit calmer here nowadays, with the dramatic granite cliffs and rocky outcrops surrounding the town being prized for their scenic rather than military value… Aléria (25 minutes) – a town close to the coast with a well-presented archeological museum – is another one to prioritise on your itinerary. Kids not riveted by Roman remains? The town is also home to a quiet, sandy beach where they can paddle. Other seaside spots of note include Plage de l'Ostriconi beach (an hour) and L'Île-Rousse (an hour and 20 minutes), where you can also set out on scuba trips. Because of its sweet sea breezes, range of altitudes and rich volcanic soil, Corsica also has a lot of lovely wines to try. Particularly well-reviewed are the cellars at Clos Canereccia (15 minutes) and Domaine Costa Verde (50 minutes).
