  • Riverside campground in Blue River, BC, just off Highway 5
  • 45 minutes' drive from Murtle Lake, only accessible by canoe
  • Bike, canoe, paddleboard and fishing gear rental on site
A river, of course (well, two actually – the Blue and the North Thompson). But also lakes, forests and mountains, with all the promise of days spent hiking, biking, fishing, canoeing and horseback riding, all the while keeping peepers peeled for the area’s wilder residents – moose, deer, eagles and bears among them. Yup, this is a pretty great place for outdoorsy folks – with the added bonus of being stonkingly easily accessible. Blue River Campground is in the little town of Blue River, just off Highway 5 halfway between Kamloops and Jasper (thus making it also a handy place for those seeking a stopover on a long journey). Don’t feel you have to turn up here with heaps of kit – the park has plenty to rent, including fishing gear, bikes, canoes and gold pans for prospective prospectors. Picnic tables and fireboxes are provided, along with a cooking shelter set up with barbecue and fridge. Facilities for kids include a sand play area with all manner of toys and games for the tiddlers, plus basketball hoops, badminton area and a soccer net for the older ones. Surrounded by nature you may well be, but also within easy reach of all the amenities of Blue River – a grocery store, gas stations and restaurants are a couple of minutes’ drive from the campground.

Local attractions

This is a mighty fine area for fresh-air frolics – bring your hiking boots to head out on local trails, some of which start just behind the campground, or explore the area on a jeep or boat safari in the summer months. Mountain bike trails and ATV routes run through the forests and meadows, too. There’s also great fishing nearby – the local rivers and lakes are full of rainbow and lake trout, kokanee and dolly varden. If you’d rather get on the water, canoes, kayaks and paddleboards are available for hire at the campground. Nearby Murtle Lake, the largest canoe-only lake in North America, can be accessed from a parking lot around 45 minutes’ drive away. Need somewhere to kick back and relax for a bit? Hit the beach at Eleanor Lake, a 10-minute walk away, to chill out on the sands, leap from the diving tower or swim from the rafts. A volleyball court, playground and firepits are also provided for those who’d like to make a day of it.
