  • Peaceful creek views; golf, fishing and cycling nearby
It’s time to get right back to nature at Baffle Creek Retreat, a small, unfussy campsite on the Queensland coast just over an hour from Bundaberg. Come on your own, for a couples’ break (up the romantic stakes by flying down in a private plane – just let the site know in advance), bring the kids, bring the dogs – all are welcome. If you arrive by road, pick up vital supplies at Baffle Creek village, 10 minutes away, where there’s a bottle shop, handy food store and fuel stop. Once at the site, you’ll be cooking for yourselves (barbecues and campfires are allowed, but bring your own kindling and equipment from home). Out there in the bush, you can kayak through mangroves edging the creek, go fishing for great trevally, and practise your swing on the private nine-hole golf course. You might even get lucky and spot kangaroos or flocks of white cockatoos on cycle rides through Broadwater Conservation Park, and there are beaches close by. There may be few frills at the site, but what you will get is hot and cold water for showers and washing up, spacious and private pitches with creek views, and car parking alongside your accommodation. While you’re encouraged to take your waste home, recycling is available on site.

Local attractions

There’s a gentle pace of life at Baffle Creek, so immerse yourself in nature and slow right down. Potter around the creek by kayak, fish from the jetty or simply gaze up at the starlit sky after dark. You might like to see Rules Beach (10 minutes’ drive) from the back of a camel on a guided trek, try your hand at coarse fishing, or explore the dunes. Hit Broadwater Conservation Park (15 minutes) at dusk, as sometimes you can see kangaroos grazing on the sands. A bit further afield, the Paperbark Forest Boardwalk (45 minutes) winds through lofty tea trees. The ocean-side town of Agnes Water (40 minutes) is the jump-off point for deep-sea fishing charters and 4WD drives across the dunes, and has a cool café scene as well.
