  • Rural dog-friendly Scottish borders site with alpacas and hill views
  • A 25-minute drive from St Cuthbert’s Way and Floors Castle
  • Alpaca treks, barbecues, firepits, firewood and refreshments available
Alpacas for neighbours, hills for views and the Scottish border around 14 miles away… that’s the setup at Beirhope Alpacas. Things are rather relaxing in this very rural part of Scotland in the Kale Valley. Still, this Scottish borders site is only 50 minutes’ drive from Berwick-upon-Tweed and an hour from Eyemouth when you want to trade in the hills for the Berwickshire coast. Over the border are Northumberland National Park (half an hour’s drive away) and Kielder Forest Park (an hour) for outdoorsy pursuits like hiking, biking and watersports. You may want to warm up first by getting involved with alpaca trekking activities on site. After all, since the friendly alpacas share the site, it’s likely you’ll want to greet them properly. On base, landscapes include a peaceful woodland where you’ll be able to peek out towards Thowliestane Hill (another ripe walking location with an Iron Age hillfort, 10 minutes’ walk away). You might be able to hear the trickle of a nearby stream in the day, or at night, set your eyes on spectacular night skies – a head torch may come in handy for the dark. Facilities-wise, this dog-friendly site has shared toilet and bucket showers, as well as additional extras that are available to purchase. This could be a hot or cold brew, a barbecue, firepit and firewood or basic refreshments. Wheelbarrows are also provided, making it easier to get from the car park to your pitch. When it’s time to collect bigger supplies or try some Scottish fare at a local restaurant or pub, Jedburgh is the closest place to do so, 15 minutes’ drive to the west of the site.

Poppy's non-electric grass tent pitch (two person)

Liked: Rural Setting, lovely & quiet. Felt really welcomed & lovely added extras with the honesty shop & onsite Alpaca shop. Loved how close you are with the Alpacas :) Stayed on the smallest pitch, was big enough to put our 4 Man Tent on, on a slight slope but me didn't mind at all as the pitch was enclose deith trees, loved the privacy :) We will definitely be returning with my 4 year old daughter when in the area, she'd love it!

Woodland Wonder non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (pet friendly, woodland, six person)

Liked: Stayed at one of the woodland tent pitches, excellent campsite, plenty of trees, plot was close to car park area but trees provided privacy. Plot was close to a small stream, which was lovely and as an added bonus saw an owl (as well as alpacas) Lynn was a very welcoming host, and having access to fridge / freezer was a nice touch, not come across those at other camp sites. While the decompostable toilet and bucket shower would not be my first choice, the facilities were kept clean at all times.

Woodland Wonder non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (pet friendly, woodland, six person)

Liked: Lovely small and quiet site in a beautiful setting. Lots of local birdlife to see, as well as the resident alpacas! Welcoming hosts with plenty of advice for those wishing to explore the local area. Great location for those looking for a quiet stay, but also within easy reach of Jedburgh, Kelso, Floors Castle, Cheviot hills etc.

Local attractions

While you’ll be in for a very relaxing time on site, activities don’t necessarily need to be slow-paced. The long-distance St Cuthbert’s Way runs through the Harestanes Countryside Visitor Centre (25 minutes' drive). You might like to stop there for a cool off and some time in the play park or café before your big hike or take one of the shorter trails. ‘While in Scotland’, get to know a little of the culture and visit a Scottish microbrewery and distillery. The Born in Scotland (25 minutes) visitor centre runs grass sledding and it’s next to an osprey nest if you’re the birdwatching type too. In Eyemouth (an hour), there's a different type of adventure – RIB trips out on the Berwickshire coast, for one. Once you’re fully acquainted with the coast and the hills, a little history perhaps? Walk or cycle the trails around the grounds of Floors Castle (25 minutes), or visit the Augustinian Jedburgh Abbey (15 minutes), one of the four border abbeys?
