  • Nearly-wild camping with stunning views across Loch Scresort
  • A 10-minute walk to the ferry port and a shop
  • Views across the bay; beaches within walking distance
When it comes to the wild, the Isle of Rum is pretty high up there. Hugging the shore of Loch Scresort, the only village on the island of Rum, this dog-friendly site rests on a pretty isle made up of a national nature reserve, making it a great choice to take a break in nature. This is a car-free island, but there's no shortage of sublime beaches and hiking trails nearby, so you’ll have plenty of chances to spot the local wildlife or just lay back on site and look out over to Skye in the distance. Plus, 10 minutes’ walk from the ferry port and an hour and 25 minutes’ ferry from Mallaig, you can head over there to board the steam railway in the so-called ‘road to the isles’. Facilities at the site include two communal barbecues (charcoal not included) and an indoor shelter for birdwatching or sheltering from the weather. There are also two showers, two sinks by the sea and access to a hot-water tap. You’ll certainly need a trusty store of snacks with so many nature trails nearby. Handily, there’s a small shop within 10 minutes’ walk which also sells hot soup and chips every day.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: the Isle of Rum

Disliked: Initial 'Welcome' at the campsite from warden during heavy rain while trying to pitch our tent, only interested in how we were going to pay for our stay and oblivious of what we were trying to do (pitching our tent as fast as possible so it didn't get wet). Camp site area for tents is very poorly designed, it was a boggy swamp most of our 2 night stay. Toilet and shower facilities were clean but are too far away from the actual camp site. Too expensive for what you actually get. Its a shame since the place has some great potential, but poorly managed.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The wee shelter was well built and had a place to charge your phone

Disliked: The toilets are ages away and are some sort of breeding ground for midges of biblical proportions. No cook shed for bad weather. Signs up in the shelter asking you not to cook in there.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Excellent facilities, bunkhouse staff were polite courteous friendly and extremely helpful I had family in the bunkhouse and was able to use the washroom and shower as it was quiet New hut on campsite was a blessing and the view phenomenal The site was quiet had fantastic views and I plan to return next year with my son Having access to the bunkhouse drying room was excellent Though the weather was predominately dry for my stay

Disliked: Only the rather wet pitch site but I was prepared for that

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful location . Basic campsite but with the added bonus of a beautiful new wooden hut with phone charging facilities and shelter from the midgies and torrential rain! Good, warm showers a 2 minute walk away next to the toilets.

Disliked: Some may dislike the fact that there is no drinking water available from a tap currently as the islands water system has been broken since may I believe. It’s advised to boil all water prior to drinking. However we didn’t and just drank it anyway and I’m alive to write this review 😬

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Super location by the sea Excellent showers New hut providing shelter from rain and midges, shelves to make sandwiches and eat food and seating to relax after a day on the hills

Disliked: The showers and loos are not very close by, so not ideal for an overnight loo visit and there is a chance of getting soaked when going for a shower

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The location and the views alone are worth staying at this campsite, however the addition of the communal shelter was a godsend during a particularly torrential 24 hours on the island! Alex who runs the bunkhouse met us on arrival and showed us lots of places of interest on the huge map inside the bunkhouse and gave us information about the local shop. We saw a couple of deer in the late evening around the campsite, some seals and lots of birds. Not too many midgies!! The showers are hot but you need to have a quick shower or we found the hot water ran out. Might have just been us!!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Great spot close to amenities in Kinloch: toilets, showers, shop etc. The new hut for campers is a great addition and is the perfect spot to hide away from midges and to keep dry - though it has the potential to get busy if there are lots of campers.

Disliked: Be aware that Rùm is remote and the tribulations that come with this. During my stay, island-wide 'mains' electricity was off temporarily, and the local showers were cold for a couple of days. However, none of these issues impacted my trip negatively, added to the overall experience, and ultimately we're outwith the control of the bunkhouse and campsite.

Local attractions

To see where wildlife and otters hide out, there’s a hide just 15 minutes’ walk away, or more nature living it up around the North Side Trail (five minutes to the start point). Some sturdy shoes or hiking boots are a must here, of course, as without the cars, you’ll be hunting down the island’s hot spots on foot. Some such places include the Kinloch Glen waterfall (45 minutes), the sandy beach and dunes at Kilmory Bay (an hour and a half) and the more rugged stretch of coast at Harris (two hours and 10 minutes’ walk) with rather lovely views over Coll and Tirree. It may be a way to go, but Dibidil Bothby (two hours and 10 minutes) is well worth the trip. It’s a little mountain cabin way up in the hills, with nothing but the landscapes (and perhaps some hairy Highland cattle) as an accompaniment.
