  • Nearly-wild camping on an organic farm with spectacular views
  • Within the Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Pick your own pitch; barbecues permitted on site
Cothelstone Estate is a quiet site in peaceful surroundings in an elevated spot within the Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with far-reaching views over the local landscape and easy access to walking and mountain biking trails. Located within an area of outstanding natural beauty, it's also within about a 20-minute drive of Exmoor National Park and the west Somerset coast. This family-friendly campsite is located between Lydeard Hill and Cothelstone Hill, with off-road trails to get you to both. These spots are great gateways to the wider Quantocks area, which has over 7,000 acres of open access land to explore – bring your walking boots along to get out onto the scenic trails around the site. The nearest sizeable village is West Bagborough, roughly a mile away, while nearby Bishop's Lydeard (10 minutes' drive) has two pubs, a brewery, a Chinese takeaway, tea rooms, a farm shop and a supermarket. Barbecues are welcome at Cothelstone Estate, but to protect the grass they need to be well raised off the ground at all times. The site's staff can also supply guests with a small number of barbecues for a small fee if you haven't brought your own (the cost includes locally-burnt charcoal).

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: We loved the remoteness and beautiful location of this camp ground. Had the duel advantage of being simple and secure. We had a camper van which I think is best on this site. Toilets are great - love a well maintained compost loo. So quiet on the site (in fact we where the only ones for two nights), spacious and what a great vista. Great communication from Hermoine and what a wonderful part of the world to visit too.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Stunning views Massive space for all to pitch Beautiful long grass Well maintained compost toilets Brilliant location with easy walk to both Cothelstone and Lydeard hills Excellent communication Well cut grass around edges and in strips through field to allow good space to pitch up and play with a reasonable amount of more level spaces (previous review mentioned long grass so maybe this has been cut since as it was no problem!)

Disliked: Having to go home 😌

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Amazing views and good instructions by e mail. The site is is mown into wide strips which does limit where you can pitch. Our 5 man tent just fitted across one but the entrance and back were in long grass ( knee high /hay length). The long grass did limit where the kids could play as it was wet weather and the long grass was soaking. I was also mindful of walking through the long grass as there are a lot of ticks on the Quantocks . The compost toilets were clean and tidy. Hopefully the weather will be kinder next time as it did blow a gale on top of the hill.

Disliked: The steps to the compost toilets are very slippery when wet. Needs some grippy treads as we had several slips. The lane next to the field is surprisingly busy so expect some traffic noise.

From the manager: So glad you liked the campsite and thank you for your really useful comments. We have now increased the grass strips to 10m from 5m and our looking at ways to address the slippery steps - so thanks for sharing your experience.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Even with 2 other vans there, felt like we were on our own! Very peaceful and quiet. Lots of space for the dog to have a run about. As close to wild camping as a campsite gets, which we love! Great having the compost toilets on site! Lots of walking directly from the site. Beautiful views.

Disliked: Quite a lot of the site is on a hill so make sure you take levelling ramps! Not a problem, but worth being ready for!

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: The view

Disliked: No designated camping areas on field. The very long grass was just cut all around the edges and some paths threw the middle off the field. Would not advise anyone to pitch a tent. We normally use a tent and I could see this being a nightmare. Booked for 2 nights only stayed the on

From the manager: David, I am very sorry our campsite wasn't what you were expecting. We thought our 5m mown strips would be wide enough to drive and pitch up on, but we have now extended them to 10m to give more space. I will review our description to make sure it is clear to guests that we are a nearly wild campsite.

Liked: What a gem of a place. Great communication with the owners, clean and hygienic toilets, amazing views, water tap from a local spring, nice walk to Cothelstone Hill and a beautiful quiet and pleasant evening. We will definitely visit again once we are in the area again. Thank you Cothelstone for a beautiful nights camping.
