  • Luxury glamping yurts in the Mendip Hills, three miles from Cheddar
  • Bristol, Wookey Hole and Weston-super-Mare within a half-hour drive
  • Secluded woodland tents with kingsize bed and woodburning stove
Gorgeous rural surroundings outside, comfy and cosy setup inside – that’s the offer at Gurt Yurts, a peaceful glamping spot in the Mendip Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty about three miles from Cheddar. These spacious and smart tents are set in a private corner of a wild camping site that’s been cultivated as a wildlife haven – that means that your nearest neighbours are likely to deer, foxes, owls, squirrels and shy badgers (although the rescue chickens may well wander over to check you out too…) The area around the yurts is all about seclusion – it’s flanked by mature woodland that hides you from view for much of the year. To boost that away-from-it-all feeling, you’ll have a private wash house next to the yurt, with a hot shower and eco-friendly compost toilet. Other nods to luxury living are provided too, including a comfy brass bed, a woodburning stove, a firepit and a collection of lanterns and fairy lights. Although you may well feel like you’re well away from everything while you’re cosied up in your yurt, it’s handy to note that in fact that’s not true. Rather pleasingly, there are several pubs within walking distance, and you can also walk all the way to Cheddar in about an hour and a half for shops, tea rooms and a good look around the gorge.

Liked: Superb clean and Warm YURT, brass double bed clean and very warm and comfortable, Superb Hot Shower, Facilities excellent, nice wood burner to heat Yurt could have been a little bigger load wise as had to watch it didn't go out, and a good fire pit outside, plenty of wood available, although I did enjoy foraging for kindling .Lovely site peaceful, and nice views and although no animals sighted we could hear them in the woods, Owls hunting at night, A superb pub about 300 metres down the lane provided lovely food and good Cider, being Somerset. Gurt yurt

Liked: Well equipped and friendly service. Met by the owner,Tim, and he transported our luggage to the yurt. Very comfortable beds and fun cooking over an open fire. Everything provided including a bottle of bubbly on arrival. Very secluded area but a short walk to the pub. It is worth a visit. Strongly recommend staying at Gurt Yurt. Thanks Tim for a wonderful stay.

Gurt yurt

Liked: We had an absolutely lovely stay and enjoyed every minute of our time at the yurt. Tim (the host) was very welcoming, extremely helpful and kind. The yurt itself was excellent, beautifully furnished, spacious, peaceful beyond belief and had everything we could need for our stay. The yurt has a SUPER comfy double bed (the best sleep we have both had in ages), and two single beds which our kids (age 3 and 6) loved. We highly recommend this amazing place to stay!! Gurt yurt

Liked: We chose to stay at Gurt Yurt as an alternative to a hotel whilst picking up our son for Easter from Bristol University. We are all quite city the trip definitely turned out to be a positive adventure. You begin your adventure by walking down a scenic forest path to the Yurt which has its own veranda, outside washing up sink, compo-stable toilet, shower and fire pit. The Yurt was really beautiful inside with a double bed and two single beds made up for our older teenagers. It was well equipped with tea towels, cutlery, dishes, cups and glasses pots and pans, kettle, toaster and hob. For warmth (as we stayed in early April), we had a wood-burner, a radiator, hot water bottles, electric blankets and extra blankets. Everything had been thought of for our comfort. It was a nice touch having some champagne in an ice bucket outside and so too, was the tea and coffee already provided. Tim was a lovely host, who took our luggage down to the Yrut on a small trailer and tractor. You can also order food baskets in advance which was very handy. More importantly, we all had some fresh air, we got up early and had 2 lovely family breakfasts, we played football outside, roasted marshmallows and sat around the fire pit at night and looked at the stars and had some good heated debates! The highlight for me was walking out on the veranda seeing a deer early in the morning which came quite close to the yrut. Wrap up warm if the forecast is a bit chilly, but we coped with that with the time that we chose to stay. Everything is sustainable and local - from the handmade soaps to the locally produced apple juice. There is a hammock in the grounds and a tyre to swing on and lots of space for younger members. My daughter also got visited by a view chickens on the veranda whilst she was studying in the Yrut, which I think she quite enjoyed. There are 2 local pubs up the road, which we did not have time to try because we decided to go and see the beautiful city of Wells. On the whole, we had a really enjoyable trip, it was our first camping experience and we were well looked after by Tim and Sara. There is a bumpy track up to Tim and Sara's property, but just drive slowly and you will be ok and you will need to switch on your 4G wifi if and when you want to be in contact with the outside world. No TV's good! With Best Wishes Edmund, Dawn, Thomas and Gena

From the manager: Wow! Thank you so much for this. We were worried it was going to be too much of an adventure. So glad you enjoyed it. Hope to see you back in the summertime for a different experience. Sara and Tim

Local attractions

As you may well expect from an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there are lots of places to get out for a walk or bike ride nearby. The craggy nature of this part of the world also means that you can have a go at climbing too. Cheddar Gorge (15 minutes’ drive) is perhaps the most famous local walking spot – and did you know there are caves to explore there too? Even bigger caves on your mind? You’ll need to head to Wookey Hole (25 minutes), where the spectacular underground caverns are cleverly lit to highlight their most important features and you can follow up your subterranean adventure with a round of pirate golf, a circus show or a stroll through the fairy garden once back up at ground level. Something different for your day out? Other options within a half-hour drive include meeting the beasts of Chew Valley Animal Park, playing on the sandy beach at Weston-super-Mare or city days in Bristol – perhaps taking the kids to We The Curious, visiting Bristol Zoo or climbing the rigging of the SS Great Britain.
