  • Dog- and kid-friendly with spacious pitches and firepits to rent
Deep in rural Somerset, Splatt Farm Gardens is an unfussy meadow campsite with fabulous views of the Quantock Hills. In this remote setting, kids and dogs are welcome to run around freely by day, while peace is ensured at night, as loud music is banned after 9pm (and no noise at all after 11pm please). With only the sounds of nature around you, here’s your chance to switch off 21st-century technology (go on, close your screen) and relax into a simple way of life. To help you on your way to total relaxation, there’s a serene meditation garden on site, as well as many woodland walks in the surrounding countryside. But don’t forget that Somerset has lots of surprises for you. The county is famous for the Glastonbury Festival, Cheddar cheese and Arthurian legends, but there’s much more waiting to be discovered. From Splatt Farm, it’s an easy hop to historic cities like Wells or fossil-strewn beaches, with spectacular gorges, underground caverns and wild moorland all on the doorstep too. Back at base in the evening, guests gather round the campfire to chat about their daily adventures and maybe catch a spectacular sunset. Farm owner Amanda and her family often join in the fun, too. You can rent firepits on site and even buy magical ‘fairy dust’ in the local shop to turn your fire into a rainbow of flames.

#1 Pumpkin Patch non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Location, cleanliness, wildness and space! This is a campsite with plenty of space for the kids to play cricket and not disturb others. Having fire pits and being able to have the dogs with us was key to the selection of this site. Friendly owners. Easy to get to from the M5. Outside shower was refreshing and added to the overall experience. Kids appreciated the trampoline and the chickens!

Local attractions

Cyclists and walkers can jump on rural routes right from Splatt Farm, and soon be on hilly, scenic trails in the Quantock Hills Area of National Beauty (15 minutes’ drive). If you’re into long-distance walking, the clifftop South West Coast Path begins at Minehead (45 minutes). Take the kids on family adventures to Kilve Beach (30 minutes) to look for ancient fossils, or explore Exmoor National Park (an hour) on horseback. You’ll need a head for heights to walk along dramatic Cheddar Gorge (50 minutes) – and from here it’s an easy side trip to Wooky Hole (an hour) for subterranean tours of limestone caverns and rock formations. History abounds in Somerset, from the medieval grandeur of Wells Cathedral (an hour) to the mysterious St Michael’s Tower on top of Glastonbury Tor (50 minutes). And foodies, you won’t be disappointed either. You can pick up artisan Cheddar cheeses at local farm shops, or sample Somerset cider at cosy village pubs.
