  • Small, simple family-run site on the Lizard Peninsula
  • Five minutes' drive to Coverack; 10 minutes to Kennack Sands
  • Spacious, level pitches with campfires allowed; dogs welcome
Life on the Lizard Peninsula is pretty sweet, with all sorts of beaches, little coves, classic fishing villages and attractions close by to explore. You’ll be right in the thick of it all when staying at Zoar Campsite – this small family-run site is in a handy central spot close to the villages of Coverack and St Keverne (both a couple of miles away and good places to find pubs, cafés and takeaway fish and chips) and within easy reach of the area’s best beaches, watersports and coastal walks. There may be plenty of action all around but it’s a simple setup on site, with only a small number of pitches to ensure plenty of space and peace for everyone. Pitches are nicely level and have access to a good cluster of essential facilities including a shower/toilet block (with separate ladies’ and gents’ areas), outdoor washing-up areas and a chemical toilet disposal point. Having plenty of space to spread out also means kids can have a good run around, and you’ll have space to set up a campfire or barbecue safely without the two getting too close. Dogs are welcome on site as well, and there are several beaches around where they can splash in the sea all year round.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Easy check in - pitch number sent by email on the morning of arrival. Nice balance between natural-looking and well maintained pitches; site mowed at least once during our stay. Plenty of space the middle of the site, so we didn't feel like we were on top of other people. Wasn't fully booked, and had a quiet, peaceful atmosphere. A number of taps, so not too far to go for water. Good recycling facilities. Owner was quick to respond to an email sent during our stay. Four minutes from Coverack - fishing village with beautiful sandy beach, gentle waves and ample free parking, great fish & chips and cream teas by harbour. Easy access locally - Kynanace and Lizard 20min, Falmouth about 35min. Free WiFi access was a boon. Struggled to connect initially, as I couldn't get signal, but once I'd connected by the shower block, could get signal enough back at the tent to stream films with no problem. Relatively few insects/wasps!

Disliked: The site was quite quiet when we were there - perhaps would struggle for access to facilities if it was more crowded (one shower for men and one for women, one washing up sink), but we didn't have any queues during our stay. Some road noise - individual cars rather than constant hum. But on the flip side, no noise from other campers.

Electric grass touring pitch (large)

Liked: Basic, simple, clean, friendly. Facilities are basic: There is a toilet and shower block. Reasonably, clean and well kept. There is a sink and fridge for public use, drain for grey-water and toilet-cassette, bins for waste and recycling. The ground is generally flat. Grass well kept. Owners are friendly and helpful. Lovely to sit and watch the sunset over Goonhilly downs.

Disliked: Single shower per gender. Floor is flat, so drains slowly. Not enough hooks or storage for dry clothing and wash-kit. It works, but could be better.

Electric grass touring pitch (large)

Liked: Friendly owners and staff. Large pitch with water & ehu at pitch. Loo's cleaned at least twice a day. Short drive to nice beeches and towns.

Disliked: Not dislikes....more possible improvements... Only 2 loo's for gents and one shower. only a small site so I'm sure that's enough for 95% of the year. Elsan point at ground level would be good as grey water waste-hog too heavy to lift up to where it is. Trees on entrance to the camping field / area could do with a prune to avoid scraping taller motorhomes (like ours).

Local attractions

Walks along the local stretches of the South West Coast Path are pretty spectacular, so it’s certainly worth getting out to see some of that scenery on foot. If you’d rather get out onto the water, head to the watersports centre in Coverack (five minutes’ drive) for paddleboarding, windsurfing and kayaking or don your scuba gear for an outing with Porthkerris Divers (10 minutes). Beaches? Kynance Cove (25 minutes) is the star of the show with its white sand, glimmering sea and rock towers – it can get pretty busy in high season though, so for quieter spots you might like to try Poldhu (15 minutes) or Gunwalloe Church Cove (20 minutes). Kennack Sands (10 minutes) is another lovely spot to seek out. Over on the east of the peninsula, the Helford estuary is the place for gentler days of kayaking and snorkelling, or the scenic ferry ride from Helford (15 minutes) to Helford Passage. For some different outings, check out the gorgeous displays at Trebah Garden (half an hour, or walk from Helford Passage), meet the residents of the Cornish Seal Sanctuary (15 minutes) or get set for the thrills of Flambards Theme Park (15 minutes).
