  • Friendly site five minutes’ drive from Mylor Bridge
  • A 10-minute drive from Falmouth; 15 to coastal paths and sandy beaches
  • A 15-minute drive to Trelissick Garden; 20 from Trebah Garden's maze
On Mylor Downs and a mile above the creekside stretch of the South West Coastal path, there’s a friendly welcome at Blooms Meadow Camping. The spacious pitches are in a peaceful setting with epic starry skies and also have a communal firepit where guests can gather together. Locally, get stuck into surfing, sailing or sightseeing… hire a board or a boat, swim or simply set yourself down somewhere sandy and relax. The facilities, including the loo and showers, are close to the fruit bushes where guests can pick redcurrants and blackcurrants to add to morning muesli. Otherwise, borrow a pan to rustle up a full English breakfast. Then, walk to the village in half an hour, where there's a wide range of shops and facilities. On site, there's mains water and a chemical disposal point, as well as a games shed with boules, football and cricket. Pizza night is on Thursday; they're cooked in the outdoor oven. Barbecues and firepits are also welcome. There’s also no light pollution, which translates into long nights spent gazing up at the starry sky, looking for Orion’s Belt and other favourite constellations. The site also welcomes dogs, as long as they are well behaved and kept on a lead. A baby bath and a high chair can also be borrowed. And then there’s the location: the site is a 10-minute drive from the outskirts of Falmouth, which has multiple attractions, including the harbourside National Maritime Museum Cornwall and Pendennis Castle, on a green headland. But before any sightseeing, a dip in the sea. The nearest beach is Flushing (10 minutes), a sheltered stretch that’s popular for sailing; or you can go to Loe beach (20 minutes), where you can swim with your dog and hire canoes and paddleboards. And when you’re ready to break out the surfboard, head to the north coast beaches like Porthtowan (half an hour).

Local attractions

Keen gardeners might find inspiration for their own plots in the splendid green spaces in the vicinity. Themed areas at Enys Gardens (10 minutes’ drive) include a meadow carpeted with bluebells (in spring) and a pine forest. Trebah Garden (20 minutes) harnesses Cornwall’s subtropical climate to create a luxuriant oasis of colourful plants and flowers. With indoor and outdoor attractions, Flambards Theme Park (25 minutes) should have enough to keep the whole family entertained. Ride the roller coasters or the Skyraker drop tower, or take a trip into the past by visiting the Victorian Village or the Britain in the Blitz exhibition. Perched on a rocky spur at the confluence of the Carrick Roads and Percuil rivers, St Mawes Castle (45 minutes) was built in the 1540s, under the reign of Henry VIII. Try to locate the ‘oubliette’ (a dark, deep hole that acted as a prison cell) before taking in the spectacular sea views from the castle keep.
