  • Off-grid Cornwall camping field with rural views near Callington
  • Half an hour’s drive to Seaton beach, Adrenalin Quarry and Plymouth
  • Outdoor kitchen and firepit; fresh eggs and seasonal veg for sale
What a fabulous Cornish spot for an almost-wild camping adventure. Sun Kissed Meadow, near Callington, is pretty much off-grid (there’s no electricity) but has lots of lovely facilities to keep everyone clean and fed – showers in a shed, a well-equipped, communal outdoor kitchen and a firepit area, where you can meet up with fellow guests to swap stories and travel tips. As well as fabulous views of lush Cornish hills, other little delights on site include home-grown seasonal vegetables for sale, along with fresh eggs for breakfast fry-ups courtesy of the free-range hens. Dogs are very welcome here, by the way, but please keep them under control around the hens. You’re likely to see lots of slightly wilder birds while on site too (woodpeckers and raptors for starters) and on rambles in the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (10 minutes’ drive). Adrenaline junkies can also get some sporting action on the waves at Bude (55 minutes), while more sedate family-centric seaside days out might incorporate Seaton beach (half an hour), where you can also exercise dogs all year round. And don’t forget the rural setting of Sun Kissed Meadow really comes into its own on clear nights, when you can sit back in the camping field and watch the Milky Way glittering far above unhindered by light pollution.

Local attractions

If you’re exploring Cornwall with family, treat younger kids to pony riding or bowling at Trethorne Leisure Park (half an hour’s drive), or take tea with lemurs and become a beekeeper for the day at Porfell Wildlife Park and Sanctuary (35 minutes). There’s also loads to do at Adrenalin Quarry (half an hour) for older kids and daredevil parents, be it wiping out on waterslides at the Aquapark, go-karting or jumping off a cliff by zipwire. Sneak a bit of history into the mix with a drive across the moors to Cornwall’s most famous pub, the Jamaica Inn at Bolventor (half an hour). The kids can have a root around the smuggling museum and scare themselves with stories of all the ghosts. At National Trust-owned Cotehele Mill (five minutes), you can spot a giant 19th-century water wheel as well as artisan saddlers and blacksmiths working at their traditional crafts. It’s always useful to have a couple of rainy day ideas when holidaying in the UK, and Plymouth (half an hour) fits the bill with the displays of woolly mammoths, art shows and live music at The Box.
