  • Wild camping site on the edge of the Lake District National Park
  • A five-minute drive to Cogra Moss lake; 25 minutes to the beach
  • On the Coast to Coast cycling route; a few pubs and a food shop nearby
From whizzing past lakes on a bicycle to hiking to the top of Blake Fell… if you’re in search of a site with raw countryside and dark skies, plant down your roots at Fellview Camping. All geared up for wild camping, this off-grid site is just outside the Lake District National Park at the foot of Blake Fell (a 15-minute drive for when you fancy a hike to the summit) and five minutes’ drive from the nearest lake. There are basic facilities including a portable toilet on site, so all you need to do is pitch up and prepare to unwind in the two-acre field with views across the Solway coast to Scotland… and the mountain on the other side, of course. There are already Shetland ponies, hens and a couple of cats on the site (plus sheep as your neighbours) to settle you in. With the Coast to Coast cycle route running past the site, jump onto your bicycle and grab a couple of snacks from a small food shop 10 minutes’ drive away (that’s half an hour’s cycle if you’re on two wheels). Or perhaps pack a picnic for a day by the sea, as the nearest beach is 25 minutes’ drive away. Handily, if the day’s activities turn out to be thirsty work, there are several pubs within 10 minutes drive of the site too, including a pub five minutes’ drive away with outdoor seating.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Nice view and we were happy to stay somewhere as the other campings were fully booked. It was very quiet.

Disliked: Quite overpriced for what you get (a field with one very dirty portapotty and one water tap that is overgrown by nettles). It's basically wildcamping but expensive.

From the manager: I'm sorry this didn't meet your expectations. We are a "pop up" field campsite which is only open 60 days per year. The portaloo is cleaned daily. I'm terms of costs, when you pay pitch up £10pp we receive a lower fee. Then we also need to pay for insurance and portaloo servicing from this figure. We can only open 60 days per year but have to pay an annual insurance. Additionally, the £10 adult/£5 children costs are on par with other similar field only sites in the area. Thank you for your feedback, we will consider how we can improve moving forward.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Good location, suitable toilet facility and available water.

Disliked: Slightly over-priced and some 'annoying' larger group late night fellow campers (but this latter point is not the fault of the owners).

Liked: Very stripped back and back to basics site. Camping in a small clearing in the meadow is beautiful. Views out towards the coast are superb in the evening. Wild camping like experience with access to water and a clean loo.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The local is perfect, a quiet field. It has a good view across the area. The field is quite big with a few mown areas to pitch. Water and a porta toilet on site . Easy to find, it just needs a camping sign or 2 up. A recommend stop.

Liked: Hidden gem of a campsite. We loved the views across the meadow. The site was peaceful and was as close to wild camping as you can get but with the added bonus of a toilet and access to water. The owners were friendly and very helpful too.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Camping in a wild flower meadow was like a dream come true. Friendly and helpful owners and ponies, hens and a cockerel for company. Walks from the site or within a 15-minute drive you can be at Ennerdale Water for more options. Great sunsets, fire pits allowed and a perfect escape.

Disliked: A few midges around if there's no breeze, so I'd recommend bringing some repellent if possible.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: I picked this campsite as I wanted to get some Wainwrights in before the weather changed. There is plenty of space to pitch, the portaloo was clean and the view on both sides is lovely. The owners were nice and very accommodating, I would definitely look to stay here again.

Local attractions

With the Lake District National Park so close by, you’ll want to bring your walking boots for a peaceful walk around Cogra Moss (five minutes' drive), or perhaps go fishing or boating on Loweswater (15 minutes). Then, pull up to Crummock Water (20 minutes), where you can hire a rowing boat or go for a dip if you fancy it. Carry on to Buttermere (half an hour) for a great lakeside walk. Or perhaps you're more into your adventure sports? If so, gear up for something a little more demanding, such as canoeing on Ennerdale Water (15 minutes) or climbing the rockface on Pillar Rock (45 minutes). There’s an activity centre (20 minutes) that runs action-packed activities such as kayaking, paddleboarding and rock climbing… or try Go Ape Winlatter (25 minutes) for a daring treetop course. And don't forget about the sea. Happily, there are beaches in St Bees (25 minutes) and Allonby (half an hour), plus the scenic St. Bees Head Heritage Coast (half an hour) if you’re on the lookout for more ripe walking grounds, this time with sea views.
