  • Family-run rural site near the village of Wainfleet All Saints
  • A 15-minute drive from Skegness and the Lincolnshire Wolds
  • Scout hut with kitchen, dining tables and space to play games
Just be prepared? Fret not if that’s the limit of your scouting knowledge, as you don’t need to be a woggle wielder to stay at Kantankye Scout Campsite (although you may have already gathered that you shouldn’t be too surprised if you encounter a group of lads clad in green). This small family-run site is indeed open to all who fancy a rural break within easy reach of the beach at Skegness and the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – you’re in between the two here, and a mere 15-minute drive from both. Anyone with vague memories of basic scout camps from their youth will be chuffed to hear that the mod con factor has been raised somewhat these days. There’s a bathroom block with showers, a small shop and the essential scout hut, home to a guest kitchen and plenty of tables and chairs for dinners, games and the like (please note the hut is available for private hire so may be unavailable on occasions, and that the opening hours vary by season). This is a particularly fab place for hols with the nippers – there’s heaps of space for them to play out in the open air and a veritable plethora of family-friendly attractions nearby. Once you’re done with your day out at the beach/aquarium/theme park/nature reserve/aviation museum, swing by the little village of Wainfleet All Saints (five minutes away) for supermarket snacks, pub grub or a chip supper.

Local attractions

This is a great spot for outdoorsy activities – it's 15 minutes' drive from the Lincolnshire Wolds for walking and cycle trails, and the dunes and lagoons of the Gibraltar Point nature reserve are about 25 minutes away. If you fancy a post-walk pint, drop into Batemans (in the village) for a tour of the Victorian brewhouse and a fresh beer. Up in Skegness (15 minutes), the splendid sandy beach is the main attraction; also in town are donkey rides, amusement arcades and an aquarium. A little further up the coast (20 minutes) are the rides and rollercoasters of Fantasy Island theme park. Another excellent visit nearby is to the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre (25 minutes), a World War II bomber airfield where you can see the control tower and ride in a Lancaster Bomber (book before arrival for a plane ride).
