  • Friendly and well-equipped park on the outskirts of Macon
  • Breweries, museums, markets and historic attractions within 15 minutes
  • Peaceful vibe with fishing pond, an hour and a half from Atlanta
‘Home is where you park it and make it’ is the motto at Safe Haven RV Park, a family-friendly park 10 minutes’ drive from Macon city centre in Georgia, so head this way to settle in for some hols dripping in southern hospitality and a down-home vibe. Anyone in dire need of a back-to-basics escape where there’s still plenty to do will be well-served here: with a place to park up for the night (or nights), lots of greenery and a small fishing pond for soothing afternoons by the water, simplicity is key round here and peace is paramount. For busier days, a jaunt into Macon – the park is on the city's outskirts – is a must… Music mavens should conduct themselves over to the Allman Brothers Band Museum, while history buffs head back in time at the stunning Johnston-Felton-Hay House, Cannonball House and Sidney Lanier Cottage, and the Tubman Museum. Leisurely strolls around Smileys Flea Market are a fab way to snap up some souvenirs of your stay, and pit stops at Macon Beer Company, Ocmulgee Brewpub or (and?) Piedmont Brewery and Kitchen come highly recommended for those who want to reward themselves for busy days with a refreshing local brew.

Local attractions

There’s plenty for history hotshots around Macon, starting with 17th-century Fort Hawkins (a frontier fort established by the third president of the US, Thomas Jefferson) 10 minutes’ drive from base. Too recent? Try the Native American cultural site of Ocmulgee National Monument to explore millennia-old burial mounds and 17,000 years of history. For those whose tastes hew more closely to the tastefully curated and indoorsy side of things, Macon's Museum of Arts and Sciences and the Museum of Aviation are both within 20 minutes of Safe Haven. Time in the great wide open is an easy option round here: Bond Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge are both within about half an hour, and are top spots for trails, hunting and fishing, and wildlife spotting, and Sandy Beach Water Park is less than 20 minutes away for those in search of more controlled outdoor fun for the kids… Craving a city day? Clamber into the car for the hour and 20-minute drive to Atlanta, where there are gardens, museums, civil rights sites, an aquarium and plenty of shops, bars and restaurants to fulfil any urban needs.
