  • Green site with plenty of trees for shade, an hour’s drive of Belgrade
  • About a five-minute drive to the Special Nature Reserve Zasavica
  • Playground, bike rental and wifi; entertainment for adults and kids
It may sound a bit odd to recommend a break beside a bog... but Camping Zasavica is close to such a good one: the Special Nature Reserve Zasavica, one of Serbia’s last natural wetlands and a hub for wildlife... The park is five minutes’ drive – or a cycle ride away, as bikes are available to hire from Camping Zasavica – from this protected area where you can spend time besides the lily-covered waters looking out for animals like beavers, otters and swans or seek rarer creatures such as the Mangalica-Srem black pig and the prairie ox. The Balkan donkey also lives in this nature reserve; guarantee a sighting by visiting a dairy farm where you can also try cheese made from donkey milk... or arrange a boat tour to soak up the scenery while sailing over the clear waters If you have more trips in mind the site can organise a few for you, like to the city of Sremska Mitrovica 20 minutes’ drive away to see the Cathedral Basilica of St Demetrius, wander around museums and roam the old Roman ruins of the city of Sirmium, once a prosperous and powerful city. On request, they can also take you to the Fruška Gora monastery – 55 minutes by car – which is famed for its sweeping green national park surrounds. After days out in the Srem countryside, the site has a playground to let the kids loose on and wifi’s available so you can catch up with messages from back home. Continuing on with a tour of the Balkans the next morning? This park’s in a top location just a 20-minute drive from the E-70 highway connecting Belgrade (an hour’s drive) and Zagreb in Croatia (three hours and a half).

Local attractions

If you’re intending to see the sights of Serbia’s capital (an hour’s drive from the park) factor in at least a day – this city at the confluence of the rivers Danube and Sava has much to keep you busy. Belgrade’s most important sight is the fortress of Beogradska Tvrđava, a landmark that pays tribute to how vital it was to the Byzantine, Ottoman and Austrian empires during the past, so make sure to check out the museums at this castle overlooking sprawling Kalemegdan park. If you work up an appetite on the wanders, either amble down the main Knez Mihailova street for restaurants or seek out eateries in the bohemian quarter of Skadarlija. If the rays are shining you could take a picnic to Ada Ciganlija, an artificial lake with beaches just outside the city (and an hour and 10 minutes from Camping Zasavica).
