Escape the city with weekend stays – or longer – at Casa Recreacional Amachito's, an hour and a half from downtown Lima: as the site team wisely points out, you don’t need to drive for three or four hours to find a peaceful wildlife haven far away from traffic and noise. Casa Recreacional Amachito's is a green and quiet site, reached via a paved road off the 36-kilometre marker of the Túpac Amaru highway. Settle down here for easy days on site or set forth into the surrounding countryside: cycling paths are about five kilometres away and the Antonio Raimondi National Ecological Park and Lomas de Ancón Reserved Zone (a protected area brimming with American kestrels and burrowing owls) are a short drive to the west. For beach days, the coast is about an hour and 15 minutes away. Options on site include an outdoor pool for gentle swims, along with football and volleyball areas when working up a sweat. Craving culture? Santa Rosa de Quives, a tourist town with Peruvian shops and restaurants, is a 40-minute drive. If you’re up for perusing the petroglyphs at Zona Arqueológica Petroglifos de Checta, they’re just outside the city limits. For quiet time, the green gardens on site are the spot for idling with a novel; when peckish, a restaurant, bar and grill area are to hand for eats and drinks. Once the whole family's fed, the playground, board games and pool table are prime for keeping mini backpackers entertained.

For kid-friendly fun, the Farm Villa Norte amusement park in Lima’s Comas district is 40 minutes away by car; sprawl on the grass in the Club Zonal Sinchi Roca public park right next door afterwards. Casa Recreacional Amachito's is 50 minutes away from Public Aquarium Nautilus for meandering beside marine creatures. The Government Palace of Lima, one of the capital’s top sights, is an hour and 15 minutes away from the park. Elsewhere in the city, you can roam the remains of the Huaca Pucllana pyramid, sample lime-infused ceviche, and check out the Catholic cathedral and its museum. Ventanilla is the same distance for wandering around wetlands and the El Paraíso archaeological site in the scenic Chillón valley. Add another 15 minutes to the drive to sunbathe on the dark sands and swim in the crashing waves of Ventanilla and Bahia Blanca beaches.
