  • Family-friendly site on the shore of the Veerse Meer lagoon
  • Next to a watersports centre and two kilometres from a sandy beach
  • Indoor pool, tennis, café, snack bar and brasserie
Watersports of all sorts reign at RCN Vakantiepark De Schotsman in the lush Netherlands district of Zeeland. This roomy and family-friendly site is on the shore of the Veerse Meer lagoon, a 22-kilometre watery body popular with sailors and boaty types, and is near the town and waters of Kamperland, favoured by watersporters of all types. The site has its own watersports centre with sailing lessons available and boats, canoes, kayaks and windsurfing equipment for hire – truly, if you haven't got out onto water much in your travelly career, this is the Dutch place at which to do it… A wide sandy beach (with kitesurfing school) is a couple of kilometres away too. Go-karts and bikes can be hired on site for your hours out and about in the surrounding countryside or along the Zeeland coast and getting to attractions within pedalling distance, such as the Oosterschelde National Park, reachable in about an hour, and the Deltapark Neeltje Jans animal, theme and water park within about 35 minutes. An indoor pool and paddling pool are at your leisurely disposal for watery antics on site; elsewhere, let the kids loose around the spacious grounds and to tackle the fine features of the indoor playground, or take them along to get stuck into tennis or beach volleyball. The recreation team runs activities in high season. Catering of all flavours is covered at the spacious and handsome brasserie, at the snack bar and at the café.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Peaceful site, close to the water; throughout the park. Good swimming pool witb grassy areas around. Good sized pitches. Helpful reception staff. Much nicer shower and toilet blocks away from the pool area which were our closest. I liked the water tap available for each pitch instead of having to go to a communal tap.

Disliked: Mixed sex shower and toilet block, our nearest was the one by the pool and was not cleaned well, smelling strongly of pee. Also could have done with a larger site shop, and poor staffing meant the restaurant was unavailable when we wanted to book.

FHU grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: The on site restaurant was nice when we ate there. Being able to see the water.

Disliked: I would firstly say this site is more suitable to people with kids but we booked it due to location and wanting to be able to see the water but sadly even being able to see the water didn’t make up for this site. This site is ill thought out in regards to parking with people parking their cars upto our pitch making it very cramped. We arrived checked in and then went back out to the beach on our return we found that our electric wasn’t working and the reception was now closed, luckily they had given us an out of hours number which we called we were then left for an hour and half in total with no electric for heating or to cook the person on the out of hours number was so rude and refused to give me her name, once the handy man arrived it was as simple as him flicking a switch in a power box that we couldn’t get into. The showers near the pitch looked like 80s kids bathrooms and the ones a bit further although better were odd ass the toilets were outside with no area to wash your hands and even in the shower rooms there was nothing to wash your hands with which i find odd especially after the past 3 years with Covid. There were a group of people having party till 2:30 in the morning again called the out of hours as did a number of other people staying but nothing was done. The one saving grace as a lady at reception on the day of our departure apologising and even sending us to the restaurant as a good will gesture.

Local attractions

Water, water everywhere – and such a lot to do. Your watery day can be sorted at the site watersports centre, where you can hire kit and vessels of all sorts, or take a sailing lesson if you still have to learn the ropes. A waterski centre is a short walk from the site and a kitesurfing school is a couple of kilometres away at the local beach. There's also the option of scuba diving at the Oosterschelde National Park, about 23 kilometres away, or having a watery family day at Deltapark Neeltje Jans, the waterpark, theme park, aquarium and animal park in the Oosterschelde region. If you're up for a townie day, drive for about 20 minutes to the old city of Middelburg, capital of the Zeeland province. Its abbey, town hall and Lange Jan abbey tower are the main items on a sightseeing checklist; there are also a few museums to see, and a handful of concert halls and theatres including Schouwburg and the Concertzaal Zeeland.
