  • Glamping stays on family-friendly site with sandy lakeside beach
  • Paradise for hikers and bikers: plenty of routes within easy reach
  • Paintball, electrocross, go-karting and miniature golf on site
Want a getaway where days are full and active, kids are worn out by nightfall and there are plenty of chances to kick back and unwind? Walk, bike or swim (quickly) to Juliette Tentvakanties at Vakantiepark de Bergen, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the Brabantian village of Wanroij. This is a top spot for active types, starting with hours spent swimming in the lake and building sandcastles, getting competitive with football and beach volleyball, honing skills in paintball, and climbing into the saddle of an electric dirt bike for electrocross. There’s an activities programme during high season too, so no need to worry about days going unfilled. That all sounds like hungry work – luckily, there are snack bars, a bakery and a supermarket to satisfy any and all cravings. At Eetcafé Festina, grab a seat on the terrace for beach views or keep an eye on the kids as they clamber over volcanoes, castles and inflatables in the indoor playground, or opt instead for Snack Bar de Peperbek to soak up the boating lake vistas while the kids hop around trampolines or whizz around the go-karting track at the outdoor playground. On days when a change of scenery is needed, there’s plenty hereabouts to entice guests away from site. If staying active is a requirement, there are lots of cycling and walking routes through this scenic part of the country – the site is half an hour from Maasduinen National Park, and there are a handful of nature reserves nearby too. There’s even bike rental on site if the Dutch national pastime beckons…

Local attractions

If a day of blissful peace is needed after the frenetic activity on site, there are plenty of soothing options nearby: within about 40 minutes’ drive, stately strolls around the stunning Arcen castle gardens come highly recommended, and the Rosarium Lottum rose garden and Gardens of Appletern are similarly sweet stops. Guests with interests that are more historical than botanical should make immediate tracks for Berg en Dal’s open-air Afrika Museum – where visitors learn about African history, culture, architecture and design – or the Overloon museum dedicated to the World War II battle that devastated the town (20 minutes away). Looking for something that’ll entertain the whole family for an entire day? Get adrenaline pumping with hours spent on the hair-raising high-octane rides at Toverland Sevenum, or keep things a little more sedate with trips to see the animals at ZooParc Overloon, 20 minutes away, and Tiergarten Kleeve over the border in Germany. For urban days of shopping, sightseeing and brewery tours, the city of Eindhoven is 45 minutes from base.
