  • Small, quiet and remote site among greenery, close to the Meuse river
  • Easy access to local bike routes including the LF12a
  • Scenic setting, spacious pitches and excellently-maintained facilities
Just simply, scenically, pretty… make for the southern Netherlands site of Camping De Maasakker for a remote setting among lush greenery and cycling routes galore among the floodplains of the Meuse river. You're well placed here too for exploring further, as the Meuse (or Maas) passes through France and Belgium as well as the Netherlands on its 925-kilometre European meander. If not, there's stacks to do nearby, from peaceful pedals along local cycle paths and the nearby Vestingroute, to wanders around local towns Megen and Oss or moseying around the region's castles and towns. Camping De Maasakker is close to the river, on a medium-sized site with spacious grass pitches (and a scenically pretty setting: see pics). The team takes care to ensure plenty of privacy and room for all guests, even during busy periods, in a setting planted with as many plants, trees and shrubs from the area as possible. After a day exploring, retreat back to base for supper around a firepit or barbecue; sort your supplies nearby at Megen, 15 minutes' walk away, or Oss, within 15 minutes' drive.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campervan campsite

Liked: A great little site, really peaceful and quiet. The hosts were great, could not do enough to ensure my visit was enjoyable. No traffic noise as it is situated just far enough from the road. Showers were fantastic as well as all other facilities. Brilliant Wi-Fi. Shopping just a couple of miles away for supplies. I will definitely be putting this one on my places to revisit. It’s not too far from the Hook to use as a stopover if travelling further afield. Be aware though that larger motorhomes can’t be catered for.

Disliked: None.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campervan campsite

Liked: A very peaceful, relaxed site with good facilities and great cycling right out of the gate. The hosts are very welcoming and friendly. If I ran a camp site, I would do it like this!

Disliked: The ground is clay, so after rain it’s a bit splodgy for a couple of days.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campervan campsite

Liked: Small with only about 14 pitches for tents and small camper vans (no motorhomes accepted). Quiet. Each pitch very well screened. Facilities block excellent and well maintained. Some very nice additional touches: info leaflets, maps, fire-pit, cycle maintenance locker, washing line, breakfast can be ordered, wifi, outdoor games equipment, covered outdoor dining shed. Friendly owner who is attentive but not fussy. Local ALDI supermarket 2km away. Excellent location if you're cycling or walking. The car ferry across the Maas is 1km away and runs until midnight. Two high end restaurants in the quaint and historic local village of Megen. A calming, serene sort of place: warmly recommended.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campervan campsite

Liked: Der Lagerfeuerplatz war wunderschön! Man bekommt sogar Holz vom Gastgeber.

Local attractions

Hire a bike from the team to get out and about around the Maas floodplains or along the river, pedal along one of the many local cycle routes, or connect with a national trail. One excellent option is the LF12a route, running for 220 kilometres along the river from Maassluis to Nijmegen past riverside castles, fortresses and bunkers: it's 25 kilometres or so to Nijmegen from Camping De Maasakker if you want to hook up with the last part of the trail. From Nijmegen, you can pedal part or all of the Nijmegen Cycle Route, a 44-kilometre path around the Rhine delta and along to the German border. A tourist information office is in nearby Megen to find out more about the region, the river, and ferry access between Brabant and Gelderland.
